How often does your knee pop/crack?

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

How often does your knee pop/crack?

Lately, while I'm pedaling I feel a slight strain or stiffness in my right knee. Every rotation, it feels like it's about to pop, but it won't. It's right at that point but just won't crack. Does anyone else experience this?

Every time I go up or down stairs.

But my knees are old and arthritic and pop like a bowl of Rice Krispies.

You know your body. If it doesn't feel "right", get it checked - and not on Bikeforums.

Good luck,

Beth

My left knee clicks on EVERY downstroke of the pedal, and has for the last two years. It's probably clicked somewhere in the 500-600,000,000 range.

See a doctor. You're young, right? I had a similar problem when I was 16 and dismissed it because it didn't hurt. One day I told my coach about it and he had me go see a doctor immediately. Knee sounds are not to be ignored, it's a sign that something isn't working right in there.

Both my knees crack about 20 seconds into the ride, fine after that.

Mine clicks all the time. I had it checked out and the ortho said that I probably have a rough spot on the cartilage in my knee. He wasn't concerned about it. You mileage may vary, of course.

I'll get that pressure sensation about once a week and then it pops and all is good from there. All of this happens in the first five miles.

Quick test, both feel on the ground, then stand on a stair (on toes), do the same thing with the next foot. If you feel a weakness or wobbly like feeling in the leg that "clicking" it could be a patella tracking disorder. Thats how the doctor diagnosed me. The specialist advised that cycling helps the problem, just try to stay in the saddle.

If I don't ride for a week or two pain in the knee starts to come back.

my right knee pops on extension at least two Dozen times a day. It'll feel like it needs to be popped and I'll just keep extending it until it does. If I don't pop it the knee gets very uncomfortable. I saw a very good orthopedist who said it's nothing to worry about.

My first thought is seat height. Just had the problem while on my trainer last night. Raised the seat 1/4" and problem went away. (I had recently removed and put back on the seat/seatpost when I gave my bike a bath and hadn't taken the care putting it back on to dial in the proper seat height.

Never ever, and I am old. But please, don't ask about my shoulders. Good thing I don't need them for cycling.

Same here. On rides it generally goes in the first 1/2 to 3/4 of a mile then is fine after that. Doc told me it was patella femoral pain syndrome.

Meh, after the last surgery the Doc said there is nothing left but bone on bone contact in my left knee. It sounds like a symphony of breaking spaghetti all day long no matter what I'm doing.

Pretty much.

It doesn't matter how much stretching or bending I do prior to clipping in, the kind of movement of my legs required to pedal a bike is the only thing that can get my knees to crack and loosen up.

It doesn't do it when I'm riding. However, I get that sound all of the time when doing Hindu squats.

I asked about it in T&N, and a member suggested that "creaking without pain is fine -- might just be crepitus."
