Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Schwag anonymous

I want so much stuff...

Giordana bib tights and matching jacket, Gore Fusion Gore-tex jacket, Dinotte head and tail lights, Ibex base layers, leg warmers, Gore-tex shoe covers, skullcaps...

Does it ever stop? Does one ever reach schwag nirvana? Is there a 12-step program?

Or should I just surrender to the higher power that is schwag, buy it all and be happy?

Try working at a bike shop. It's like an alcoholic working as a bartender.

Yes, after 11 months, 9,000 miles, I have life on the bike finished. The Dinotte Tail Light was the last thing.
I love it. Vehicles move to to left further and sooner.
Surrender Now. I fought it all the way to the finish.
Now I can ride relax.

I've been buying a bunch of winter stuff. I'm not buying a light setup because I'm not going to ride at night in the winter. Too freaking cold. I am growing a winter beard though.

Speaking of beards, I've decided I'm growing a playoff beard for both the Penguins and the Hurricanes. Whichever makes it farther.

I'm also considering growing one for the Carolina Panthers, but it's not a football thing. I mainly just want a reason to have a beard because it looks kinda weird to have a full beard at 20.

I think the guy I ran into with not one, but TWO $900 Lupine lights on his Cervelo SLC last week has us all beat. These are the only types crazy enough to be out riding a road bicycle when I'm out, @ 6:30AM, in the dark, on a Saturday morning in the middle of friggin nowhere in late October.

He's richer than all you Freds put together. Trust me. He's also faster than everybody here except Dr. Will. It is comforting to know that no matter how fast or wealthy he is, he is utterly and completely out of his friggin bike weenie mind.

We are not alone weenies.

I'm cured I tell ya. This year I have only bought:

Pair of Conti GPs (replacements)
2 pairs bibs (closeouts)
one chain (replacement)
chain lube (must have)
one roll of bar tape (replacement)

That is it!

Of course it is only October and things would have been so much different if Dura Achee wasn't freakin' VAPOURWARE

2.) We came to believe that a power greater than ourselves could relieve us of our obsession.

Unfortunately when we PM'd Uncle Pcad, he simply told us to STFU and buy the bike schwag.

Buying bike schwag is as good for the soul as... riding the bike!

Let's see...

Ground-up build of MTB
Ground-up build of CF bike
New helmet to match said CF bike
Four new pairs of bike shoes
Two pairs of Time Atac pedals
New track hub for FG (replacement after I chewed up the first one)
New Dura Ace 16T track cog
New dyno/Nicad headlight
Four new woollen De Marchi jerseys in French and Belgian colours (two for me, two for Machka)
MTB for Machka
Workshop tools for said builds
New touring panniers
New waterproof handlebar bag
New MEC rain and wind jackets

It's been a fun year... so far.

That's the spirit. There's nearly 70 days left to blow cash on bike crap.

And then of course there's 2009. We may all be living under highway overpasses, but we'll have cool bicycles and accessories.

Umm, isn't it only "schwag" if it is FREE?

Not in cycling. Getting free bike crap generally involves working in the bicycle industry, and nothing can justify that sorry state of affairs. Therefore, for bike weenie purposes, bike schwag remains schwag even if you actually pay for it.

I thought that would happen. But then we got SuperRecord, Dahons, and blinky lights, so it's all good.

Every time the UPS man arrives at the shop with big boxes... it's like Christmas! And I get it all at cost! It never gets old.

Yeah, I know a guy working at the LBS and he practically just signs his paycheck over to the owner when he gets it. I have a feeling I'd do the same.
