Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

next step

I'm a 48 year old male living in Brooklyn, NY. Over the last year I've been taking 20-30 mile rides in the 5 boros on a nice pre-owned REI Novara Corsa ( 21 speed, 27 inch x 1.25 slick tires, steel frame, upright handle bars, toe clips).

I'm thinking I'd like to step it up- not all at once, but in increments ( after all, part of the fun is prolonging the process). 2 ways I see this going: first, upgrading my current ride ( better wheels? riding shoes/pedals?) Second, I could also get a used touring bike for riding in Prospect Park or out of town ( city rides tend to have a lot of potholes). This bike should cost no more than $600 used and should be an armature for on-going upgrades for a number of years ...

Thoughts about either situation?
