6 Daagse van Amsterdam

Notices
Road Cycling It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle. -- Ernest Hemingway

6 Daagse van Amsterdam

Last night I went to see the Amsterdam Six Days for the second year in a row. Last year we were seated in the tribune, right by the start/finish line. This year we were on the banks, which meant that we could get pretty close, even if the tickets were technically not as choice.

Apologies in advance for the quality. Digital point and shoot cameras, in low light, with fast paced action, don't produce the best results.

So, on to the pics.

We arrived in the midst of the Madison.

In the orange shirt is Joan Llaneras, looking for Paolo Bettini.

There's Cricket, on a typically understated bike.

Leif Lampater (in black) about to get a sling from Eric Zabel.

After that round of the Madison was over, the sprinters came out.

Theo Bos, and team mate, in the team sprint.

A British guy, whose name I forget. He and his partner won.

Then, there was the Women's event, starring Marriaane Vos.

After the women's event, the organizers dragged out a singer, to entertain the masses. Kitsch doesn't even begin to describe it.

Then it was back to racing, including the main men doing a 2 man TT.

Slippens and Stam.

They're fast, very fast. I've done my best to hold their wheels a few times this year.

Zabel and Lampater warming up.

Leon van Bon on the front.

After the TT, they released the Dernys.

Once the Derny race started, we made our move to the exit tunnel, to try and see some of the racers leaving the VIP zone. I'm not quite sure how, but we managed to get in.

While my friends were taking advantage of the free beer, I took some more snaps. Have to work on my priorities.

Some bikes.

Close up of Bettini's monstrosity.

The bell.

Dernys.

Wheel pit.

Robert Bartko waves.

Lampater gets interviewed.

Risi and his Derny rider Joop Zijlaard get the girls and flowers.

The Madison's always my favorite race to watch. Great pics per usual botto.

But perhaps more importantly than the racing, how was the beer?

Explains why Theo Bos isn't putting on empty calories one pint at a time.

Either that or his highly lucrative racing career.

Do the people in the center even watch the race? That would kill my neck.

Bettini seems bent on trying to upstage Cipo on the gaudy factor.

Great posting..... It'd be nice to have races like this in the states, but I doubt even a handful of people would turn out.
Then again, free beer.

Impossible. Even when he went over the top, Cippolini had/has a fashion sense.

That was only in the VIP section.

While Bettini opts for gold lame, LLaneras, a multiple world champion as well as an Olympic champ, keeps things more subdued (apart from his helmet).
