Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Hi all,
I have had my new shoes/pedals(shimano M520) about a month now but everytime i go out for a ride after about 3 miles or so i get pain down the outside of me feet, always worse in the left foot than the right.I will try to explain the pain, its an ache all the way down the outside and i feel like i just wanna put my foot down to relax it.Any ideas where i can start?

Cheers

Try loosening the shoes. As you cycle your foot swells with blood making your snug fit unbearable. I have the same problem and it took close to three months to break the shoes in. In hind sight I should have gotten another pair but they were so cheap and carbon it was worth the trouble.

I have that same pain in my left foot. The Lemond cleat shims resolved some of it. Play around with cleat placement as well.

If I stop and stretch my foot out every so often it helps. Also stretch before you ride. Arch your foot to the outside and stretch the ligaments of your foot.

LeMond or Specialized shims can fix problems like this, but they can difficult to use accurately. If you don't want to spend days experimenting, consider paying an expert bike fitter to do it for you.

I get the same pain when I wear my ankle braces and tighten them up too tight. Make sure your shoes are loose enough to be able to wiggle your toes.
