Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Bike Shops in New York?

Morning. I'm off to New York for a week's holiday in a couple of weeks and I was wondering wether there are any shops(LBS or otherwise) worth visiting whilst there? I'm goin wi a lass who has no interest in bikes so I was hoping to find one or two very good shops fae you guys so that I can do quick in and out stops.

Also i'm thinking that I may have a look at seeing if I can get a classic road frame over there-something like a 70's Schwinn perhaps(you don't see many over here) as a doer upper-any idea's of stores for such a thing?Or is that just a luck thing?

Cheers in advance.

Did that. All I seemed to find was people arguing about attitudes fae the shops in question.Apparently people in NY have attitude.

I was just hoping to cut through all the bickering.

Aye-I did. Sorry if my searching didn't come up to your exacting standards. But cheers-the first of those two was one I hadn't seen. The other I had.

Cheers.

Hello,

I like Sid's Bikes (2 locations 19th and 7th and 34th and 2nd). They sell Bianchi, Orbea, Specialized, and a lot of others) I bought my Orbea from them.

Also, Toga bikes on 63rd and 1st is great. Bicycle Habitat on Lafayette sells Specialized and Trek. Got my Madone from them.

If you are into triathlon gear then there's SBR near Carnegie Hall (58th and 7th)

My experience with all these shops have been very positive - they were welcoming and friendly. Took a lot of time to fit me and they go all out in customer service.

Hope this helps

I thought Sids had pushy salesmen who didn't seem to know much about the bikes in their shop - just my opinion and I know others will differ. They do such a volume, I felt like I was rushed and didn't get the attention I felt I deserved when I went in there.

I really like Cadence, not your average bike shop, but they did a fit for me and seemed ot be a bunch of really nice guys who went out of their way to retain customer loyalty.

I think Mass. has a lot better shopppes than NYC area. If you could rent a car and drive up there you'd get to check out a lot of little (and large) shoppes with IF, Sevens, Merlins, and other cool American made frames.

I found the guys at Cadence to be super-friendly and really nice, even though all I was after was a cheap stem and some grease. That place is also bike-porn-tastic.

The Gotham/Toga bikes round the corner was a real disappointment.

And Conrad's is really good, too. They're good people.

Conrads is a nice shop but doesn't have much to show. Sids, Toga, Bicycle Habitat, are the ones I always find myself in for reasons other than what they carry, they are on my travel paths for various trips. R&A in Brooklyn is the most drool worthy.

Conrad's is worth a visit, if for no better reason than you get a feel for Tudor City.

Any small opportunity to plug Roy's Sheepshead Cycle I will take. Love these guys. Especially the mechanics.

As much as I hate to admit it, R&A is, hands down, the bike pron king of NYC. You'll start drooling the second you get near the door. They have a huge selection of bikes and parts, but service can be lacking at times.

Cadence is also great for oogling nice bikes.

If you want older frames, your best bet is hit up the sketchier shops and the flea markets.

It really depends on what you're looking for, but there are a assortment of shops that specialize in different things.

If you're at all interested in track, go check out Trackstar. They have plenty of nice parts, and not always just for track.

Bicycle Habitat has great service and is full of helpful dudes that aren't dicks like at R&A.

That's not really true. Bicycle habitat is just as expensive, less selection, and have their fair share of dicks. R&A has plenty of ******s, but if you ask for Felix or Pancho, they are great guys that knows what they're talking about.

I didn't want to be the snooty downstater who would have to break the news to him. Being a fan of the outdoors I must say that upstate NY is well worth visiting.

As for decent bike shops in the general midtown area:

Toga (64th & 11th)
Bicycle Renaissance (81st and Columbus)
Sid's (34th 2nd & 19th between 6th and 7th)

These are ones I've been to, so it's not to dismiss the shops other posters have mentioned I thought I'd list these in case the only time you have to go to them is while you're sightseeing in Manhattan.

Go to R & A Cycles on 5th Avenue in Brooklyn. It's easy to get there from out in Manhattan. Just take any of the subway lines that go to Atlantic Avenue (B, Q, 2, 3, 4, 5, D, M, N, R) and just walk over to 5th Avenue. The address is 105 5th Avenue.

They have one of the biggest selections in New York City. They can be a bit surly, but that is just part of the fun. Phil is the owner, and Albert is his son. Felix can be a lot of fun to talk to if he is not busy.

Bring him an iced mocha latte from Gorilla next door, and he will be your best friend.
