Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

First thing you look at in a bike...

For some reason, ever since I was a kid, I looked at the crank first on a bike - then the brand. Anybody else see something different?

My eyes go to pedals first. Then wheels. Then brand.

If they don't have clipless I probably won't bother looking at the wheels or the brand. Unless it's in order to post a story on BF about a guy riding a Cervelo with Zipps and platform pedals.

You are scoping out the gearing they use.

I do the same thing.

i'm really into frame gemotry and color scheme, upclose i look at the rear derailer. i really love the look, shape and style of rear. then the cyclist legs, lastly the rims and spoke patteren.

Stem rise, gearing, wheels, then brand. I also make sure that their saddle matches their bar tape.

The quads of the rider on it. That's all that matters.

I think I may have missed that debacle of engineering personally. I'm currently riding an Octalink DA 7700, and by the time I buy a new bike it will probably be BB30.

Wait, did you mean shells? You're actually seeing that many BB30 bikes already? I was thinking you meant how huge and wide external BB are, I can't stand how they look.

I originally thought you meant external BB cups.. I think they look stupid and ridiculously wide.

I didn't even necessarily mean BB30, I just meant the huge bottom bracket areas that are being build up to improve stiffness in that area. Anyway, my Tarmac is BB30.

Which Tarmac do you have? The BB area on my SL is a monstrosity.

depends on the context.

if I'm desperate for a wheel, I stare at the cassette.
if a hot chick is riding, I stare at her ass.

...

...

...

...

yeah that's about it.

for some reason, the handlebars, and then the frame type (touring, racing, comfort) every once and a while, you see interesting mixes, like a beach cruiser frame with road components

Frame.

If it's anything interesting, I proceed to the rest of the bike.
