Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

L'Alpe D'Huez, Col de Croix de Fer,...

Looking for some advice on places to stay between Grenoble and Briancon, where we will be in easy reach of the likes of Alpe D'Huez, Galibier,... and also somewhere that is reasonable and sleeps 8 people. A Gite seems to be the way to go. Can anyone recommend towns, gites or guest houses???

Cheers

You should probably stay in Bourg d'Oisans. This is the town at the base of Alpe d'Huez.

We stayed in Grenoble, and rode to and up Alpe d'Huez for stage 17 of the TDF during our vacation this summer. It is a 50K bike ride just from Grenoble to Bourg d'Oisans.

However it was a nice ride, so if you are not pressed for time.....

A site I have used to find campsites in France that may help you with the region.

I want to stay here next time I'm in Bourg d'Oisans
It's really not THAT far to any of the climbs around there. And the driving is amazing.
