Whats the best advice?
What was the best bit of 'Holy Sh*te' advice that made your riding faster/better immediately. Even if it was psychosomatic.
I read somewhere about holding your breath for a fraction of a second when your lungs are full to maximise the absorbtion of oxygen. I have no idea if it was BS or not but I suddenly started posting slightly faster times on regular rides...
How 'bout you??

OK, straight answers:
1. motorpace behind a motorcycle.
2. scootch forward on the saddle when you're tired.

For me there's been two things that have helped my riding.
1)look up and ahead. This was something I had to consciously work on with the mtn bike; to the extent that I am repeating the words mentally to myself. It makes almost as big a difference on the road bike, especially with descents.
2)outside pedal down when cornering. the faster the corner the more control this gives me.

This post by Psimet2001 helped me realize that I was riding at too high a pressure.

My LBS told me to ride at 120. Go figure.

incorrect.
your mental thought should be: "pedal faster"
and as long as we're on subtle mind tricks, here's one I've used many times. when you're on the limit and about to get dropped, or bridging that last few feet across a gap, look at a specific place on the rider ahead of you. I stare at the cassette. and imagine a string or cord from the bike, pulling you across.

When it hurts... EVERYONE IS HURTING.
When you think you can't hold the pace... hold on for ten more seconds.
Don't break, or brake.
