Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Help - issue with rollers

Hi - this isn't the usual questions raised here - but I hope the larger knowledge base of many individuals would help me better than myself.

I have a set of PVC rollers with a fluid resistance unit - it rides fine and everything, but it starts to vibrate when I'm at 26mph+. The resistance unit is rated to 400watts max - and I was wondering when I was riding last night at 53 x 14 and heard a loud ping/ding/crack (sound) (was at 100rpm around 30mph) - I stopped and immediately checked my bike, wheels.

They're true, nothing damamged.

So... where did the sound come from? Any insights appreciated.

Danged if I know. When I get up to those speeds, I start to buffet as if I might ride right off the rollers so I have to slow down. I have a friend who says is able to get his up over 50 mph and says that perhaps my pedal stroke needs to smoothen out some. I don't think that is the case cause I am fairly smooth in the the 20 mph range. Im hoping others will comment here as well.
While Im here, Im hoping someone can kindly tell me how to post since they changed the format of this site. I used to click on a thread and then I was offered the option of posting a new post or making a reply to the thread. Since the change I cannot find how to make a new post for the life of me. Please help and I apologize for encroaching on this thread shinybaldy. This has frustrated the heck out of me.

The ping may have come from either your PVC rollers or the resistance unit. You might try removing the resistance unit and riding to see if you hear the noise again. If not, add the unit and try again. At least, you might know where the ping came from. It could be a bearing.

Rollers with fluid resistance unit? who makes it, cyclops?
I wonder if something broke loose in either the rollers (bearings)
or the fluid unit.
I'd try to isolate the units (no resistance unit) and see if it makes
the same noise.
BTW, did it continue to make noise or was it a one time only deal?
