Steering tube broke - what to do

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Yes you technically can but its a lot of work and usually depending on your deductible, it might not be worth it. Or go through homeowners or renters insurance if you don't have car insurance.

Dear Ford Motor Co,

I was recently involved in an accident in which I was not at fault. The other driver hit me head on while texting. My Ford Escape is still under the manufacturer's 1 year bumper to bumper warranty. I'm writing to see if this kind of thing would be covered under warranty. Enclosed is a picture of the minor damage sustained.

Thanks,
j.r. along

And the reason you gave them for the "failure" of the frame was?

If you purchased the bike in the last 90 days on certain credit/debit cards you would be able to make an insurance claim through the card companies insurance provider, even if the damage was caused by you.

I'm glad cervelo replaced the frame for you.

The damage might have started with the crash or it could have started before that and been exacerbated by the crash.

All in all, glad you're okay and that you got a new frame. Good on cervelo for standing behind their product when the reason for the damage was unknown.

O hai guys, my bike is broken as well.
Do I need a new frame? I also cannot go into details as to how this happened.

*edit* update- I got a new bike for free.

Is my car covered by a warranty if I drive into a brick wall at 60 mph? How can I lie and get away with it?

i can tell you right now that it isn't a result of defective materials or workmanship. so no warranty. they might hook you with a discounted frame if they have a crash replacement program. i've seen that happen on a guy's kestrel when he t-boned a fallen rider. the fork popped right out of the front of the headtube! unbelieveable...but not the bike's fault.

The Cervelo crash policy supplies a replacement frame at about 1/3 off the retail price.
The original frame must be bought from a Cervelo dealer, and registered.

From the OP's pic, I've seen this before: he drove it into a garage on a car-top carrier.
I saw a guy destroy an R3, SLC, and P2C all in one shot that way.

Oh, it gets better...the three frames were crushed, and the carrier lifted the top of the roof of his car and tuna-canned it 6 inches. Audi A6.

It's one thing to make a mistake that makes you look like a complete fool, but when you punctuate it by doing it with high-dollar stuff, it just makes it that much worse (or better, if you're the spiteful type).
