Using Fractions on a Century
I am 50 years old, diabetic and 230 pounds and I am NOT a strong rider. I have done two centuries now including the one I did on Saturday. It was quite windy and I knew I was in for trouble by mile 50 after fighting headwinds for 2+ hours. Thats when I started using fractions to help me "Gut Up" and complete the 105 mile ride. I seriously doubt I would have completed the ride yesterday without doing the "fraction thing".
At mile 60, I was starting to hurt pretty bad so I started thinking as I rode. I thought I have only 40% of the work I have done left to do.
At mile 70, More pain, and I thought: Hey I only have 30% or about 1/3 of what I've already done!
At mile 80, I was thinking about quitting and I trudged on by reminding myself I only had 1/5th of the previously done work to go.
At mile 90, I had no doubt I would finish because I knew I only had 1/10 left.
At mile 100, It didn't matter anymore. I knew that I would ride either the bike or the ambulance as there was no way I would quit.
Stats:
105.02 miles
6 hours 40 minutes
15.76 avg
And that's why I call myself "On Your Right".

that's the mental game of the ride.

I always do that, it works well and keep the mind busy doing calculations instead of whatever strange thoughts triggered by lack of oxygen.
Congratulations on your accomplishment.

I divide all my rides of 100 miles and longer up into fractions. Somewhere after the 1/4 point of the ride, I start calculating and divide the ride into halves, thirds, quarters, fifths, sixths, sevenths, eighths, nineths, tenths ... and sometimes, if the ride is really long, elevenths and twelfths.

At least now we know why alot of roadies appear too stuck up to wave. They're doing math! After all, who can ride, convert 56 into a fraction of 100 and wave like Miss America all at the same time?

You can't land on Jupiter with fractions.

Correct. Maybe doing the maths keeps him going either because it's wrong and he kids himself or because he's so busy trying to get it right that he forgets the pain!
Whatever, fair play to the guy cos I'd struggle to do a century averaging 16mph while carrying an extra 50lbs. Congrats OP and keep it up.

True ... but until we can cycle to Jupiter, I don't think we need to worry too much.

Has anyone else experienced Zeno's Paradox of Estimated Time of Arrival?
You calculate your time to destination, based on your current speed - X miles in Y minutes.
15 minutes later, you do it again - still X miles in Y minutes.
The wind or hill continues to pick up.
Again you calculate, and again, again, again!! X miles in Y minutes!!!
At this rate, you will NEVER get there.
Happened to me riding to Te Anau. Eventually I did get there, but for about an hour I was pretty sure I would not.

I do same thing, but when I am hurtin' before the 50% point it kinda deflates me and has a negative effect.....keep it up, you only have 75% of the ride left......ouch, then lets just quit now
