Best Tubular tires?

Is there a consensus on a few top tubular tires? For example, Conti 4000s and Michelin Pro Race 2/3s seem to be the favorite clinchers around here. I'm going to be buying a set of Reynolds DV46s or SDV66s within 6 months and want to get some good rubber for them. Thanks!

Dugast silks. Or so I've heard. Too rich for me.

Vittoria Corsa, Veloflex Record or Criteriums

Not sure about consensus, but Vittoria EVO Corsa CX come highly reccomended by a lot of people.

Wow, for $140 - $220 a pop, they better be amazing!

I like the Schwalbe Stelvios - haven't used too many others but these are pretty supple

For $45-$50, these work for me. I used to race various silks back in the old days, but not worth the $$ to me right now.

I only race Vittorias and of the CX variety.

I'd say we're getting pretty close to a consensus. :thumb:

For me I always like running Vittoria Corsa CX's for Road races.

For Criteriums my tire of choice was Conti Sprinter, you could crank those babys up to 180 psi with no issues..

Money: FMB Silk Criterium tread.

Less Money: Vittoria Corsa EVO CX.

Cheap: Continental Sprinter.

Which is a myth that needs to be debunked. Tire Pressures over 125 psi are found to be slower than the tire pressures we use to use like 160-180psi. Unless you are on super smooth pavement like a track.

Vittoria Corsa CX's and Conti Sprinter's

I have used the following in no particular order

Veloflex Carbon
Continental Competitions
Continental Sprinters
Vittoria Corsa EVO
Vittoria Rally
Yellow Jersey's 3 for $50 tubulars

For just overall good ride I would put the Veloflex at the top of the list followed by the Vittoria Corsa Evo. For more general riding both Continentals are at the top of the list. For winter training the best so far has been the Yellow Jersey cheapos. If you dont mind the few extra grams the cheapos from Yellow Jersey were round with no lumps, nearly bulletproof and they were cheap. I would never suggest that anyone use the Vittoria Rally, thay are aweful tires.

fogrider 11-13-08 01:34 AM

I have used vittoria cx, they are smooth but the latex will leak air, if you're on a long ride, don't use them. conti competitions are the way to go. super tough and fast.

vic32amg 11-13-08 02:28 AM

I think the proper question is what are you going to be using them for?

I use the gator skin sprinter for training. works great but rather heavy and not the smoothest. Vittoria makes a great tire.

iab 11-13-08 07:28 AM

$$$$$ - Dugast & FMB
$$$$ - Veloflex
$$$ - Vittoria
$$ - Continental & Gommitalia
$ - Yellow Jersey

By best what quality are you looking for them to perform well in? Ride, durability or weight?

And super high pressure gives you bad cornering for crits

SushiJoe 11-14-08 11:35 PM

I was more or less asking for all riding conditions and that's been pretty well answered. They'd be for road racing and regular use. This is, of course, once I have the dough for some carbon tubular wheels on which to put them.
