Trainers-Rim or Tire drive?

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Trainers-Rim or Tire drive?

I am not looking for a brand or model recommendation, just opinions on which type is preferred and why.
Thanks
George

Tire drive. They make trainer tires for trainer use, but wearing out a rim seems like a bad idea to me.

A rim style would be nice on race days so you could train on your race tire and not worry about wearing it out, however for everyday use, as mentioned above, a tire is much cheaper then even the crappiest rims.

Tyre.

I just use a crappy Bontrager Select tyre, it's a darn sight cheaper than a new rim/wheel build...

Has anyone used a rim drive? Did you have the the rim wear issue? Were there any other issues?
If so, how did you use it, ie heavy pressure, 3 hr rides, daily????
How long did it take to wear out the rim?
What wheels were you using?
Thanks
George

I've used a rim drive for 3 years now and have not noticed any wear. I have some Bontrager Race Lites and they seem to be fine. I would recommend it off my experience.

I liked the concept of a rim drive to avoid tire wear so I went out and bought a Minoura rim drive trainer. What a joke. Everytime you rock the bike a little, it looses tension on one side. I got what I paid for.

I sold it on Ebay and bought a real trainer - a Kurt Kinetic Road Machine and have put several thousand miles on it in the last couple years (Wisconsin - cold winters). It will last the rest of my life in all likelihood.

Don't waste your time and money with those rim drive toy trainers.

What is your training like? Have you experienced the slipping issue?
Just trying to wrap my arms around this.

BTW, anyone work with rollers?
What is the difference in workout vs stationary trainers, aside from the balance and concentration needed?
Thanks
George
