Bolt pattern on chainrings
I am learning how to take apart my bike, clean it and put it back together. Before I venture into actually taking anything apart, I need to ask a question. Perhaps it isn't even an issue and I am overthinking things. Anyway...
I know when you are tightening the nuts on a car tire, you are supposed to use a star pattern so that the tire goes back on evenly. Do I need to do this with the chainrings, too? Or can I just put the bolts back on going around the circle?
Thanks!

Best across the ring in a star pattern. Torque incrementally...not all at once....gradations of 30 percent increase until you hit target torque.

it's best to go in a star pattern for anything with 5 bolts. for 4 bolts, an X pattern.

Not intended to be rude, but why would you NOT do it in a star or X pattern? This is just good practice all-around, for anything. It's not like it's easier to tighten them sequentially around the perimeter (unless you're that bad at keeping track of which ones you've already tightened). So just get in the habit of doing the star (or X or whatever depending on # of bolts) for everything.
