Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Crank Brother Egg Beater pedals

Well, I just can't resist new toys so a few weeks ago I placed an order with my LBS for the next pair of uncommitted Egg Beaters they could get. They finally got some a couple of days ago. Today I had a chance to stick them on and try them out. As a Look devotee, I was not sure what to expect from the tiny platform. I was pleasantly surprised when I really noticed no particular difference in the platform feel. Clipping in and out was very slick. It was nice not to have to worry about which side of the pedal was up since you can clip into any of the FOUR sides. Clipping in will take a couple of rides to get used to. Because of the small platform, the initial contact between pedal and cleat is probably a good inch farther back on the shoe than with Look pedals, but this seems easy enough to get used to. After that I think it will be easier than even my Looks. I actually wanted to try the Egg Beaters primarily for my commuting so that I could use mtb shoes that will be easier to walk in. If my initial impression proves out over time and the pedals prove dependable in the long run I can see possibly switching all my bikes over.

An unexpected benefit: Some of you may recall a thread over on Bicycle Mechanics about a pair of road shoes that I could not remove the screws from when I tried to change the Look cleats. Since the Egg Beater cleats use the SPD screw holes I was able to hacksaw the screws off and salvage the shoes for use with the Egg Beaters. Glad I had put the shoes aside and didn't try anything destructive to get the screws out!

My test ride with the Egg Beaters was short so this is just a first impression. As I ride on them more I will report back.
Regards,
Raymond

RP,

What do they cost? How much do they weigh? Are there multiple versions or just the one? I've seen pix of them but haven't read any reviews other than yours. Thanks for the info. I happen to be in the market for some pedals and am leaning towards X2 speedplays. I'll wait for the final results to come in.

Crank Brothers' website, crankbrothers.com, says they weigh 283 grams and a future ti version will weigh under 200. They cost about $120. Not cheap, but not as much as many others either. They are also very simply built and touted as easily servicable, including bearing replacement with a 3 mm allen wrench and snap ring pliers. Tension is not adjustable, but Crank Brothers says it is not needed. They also have links to a couple of reviews. Two year warranty, too.
Hope this helps.
Regards,
Raymond

I thought I had once read that a SPD cleat was compatible with the Egg-Beaters. Is that true?

I liked the look of them - how are they for clipping out?

Richard,
They clip out just fine. Feel like my Looks in that regard.

I have not used SPD so I am not even sure what the cleats look like. The Egg Beater cleats use the same mount holes and may be the same.

Raymond

I was in my LBS today and asked about cleat compatibility. The SPD cleats don't look the same as the Egg Beater cleats. The reference to their being compatible may have referred to the fact that the EB cleats mount in the SPD screw holes. The Time ATAC pedals looked like the "loops" that you click into are about the same size and distance apart as the EBs so we pulled out a set of ATAC cleats as well. Though they are similar, I wouldn't buy a pair to try them. If I owned a pair already I would. Meanwhile I will wait until the LBS can get a couple of pair of EB cleats so I can have a spare set on hand. Apparently the pedals are hard enough to keep in stock and the cleat supply just hasn't caught up. Unless some hidden design or quality problem manifests itself these pedals could become very popular. They are about as simple as a pedal can get. Possibly even simpler in construction than most platforms! And they seem quite sturdy. More to come as I ride them.
Regards,
Raymond

I like the minimalist aspect of the Egg Beaters. If it wasn't for the price, I would buy them right now.

Rainman, I look forward to hearing how they perform.
