How cold does it have to get for you not to ride?

One of my riding buddies says he won't ride below 50.

I am thinking 45 should be doable.

What about you? (and why)

blacksquid 11-19-08 12:13 PM

I'm good into the low 30s and sometimes high 20s with a bit more preparation. Just so long as it's not wet!

cris2fur 11-19-08 12:13 PM

Don't really have a temperature barrier...

but unplowed roads make it difficult to ride.

mackerel 11-19-08 12:15 PM

Just above freezing temperature - any lower and my eyeballs begin to hurt.

valygrl 11-19-08 12:16 PM

38
or
>15mph wind
or
<45 plus wind

I may try to push that lower this winter, but hope not to have to.

uke 11-19-08 12:17 PM

I've already done rides in the twenties with the wind chill in single digits. Since I ride to class multiple times a day, five days a week, the only times I take the car are when it's raining and when I need to be somewhere immediately after class that's too far to drive.

Creakyknees 11-19-08 12:23 PM

usually 40-ish... depending on sun/clouds, wind/rain and motivation / level of current perceived fatness.

tntyz 11-19-08 12:27 PM

Into the upper 20's, but depends on wind and precip. Got caught out last week in freezing rain and gusty winds. That stuff simply hurt my face!

Tequila Joe 11-19-08 12:27 PM

Commuting to work has hardend me up a bit.

I will do a road ride as cold as -15 C (~0 F) if it isn't to windy & if the roads aren't icy. Otherwise I'd go mountain biking.
I use to go colder a few years ago but I've gotten soft in my old age.

ptle 11-19-08 12:28 PM

I don't bike when it feels like its under 50*F... Mainly because I don't have the right gear.

TRaffic Jammer 11-19-08 12:29 PM

Never met a day I couldn't ride, and I'm talking about some seriously cold Montreal winter days. Arctic cold, snow storms that shut the city down are par for the course

grahny 11-19-08 12:32 PM

10*F. Can't seem to beat the cold of the wind at that temp and I feel my bones starting to turn to ice.

substructure 11-19-08 12:34 PM

I've been in 17*F with some wind. Made it out alive.
I think anything close to 10, I would reconsider. In the south it doesn't stay cold very long. So, I can wait.

xanadu 11-19-08 12:36 PM

I guess I am soft. I will not ride in the rain or when it is below 30 degrees. Period. I will decide if I ride based on the wind between 32-40. I will ride almost always when over 40 and dry. Day or night.

bdcheung 11-19-08 12:36 PM

It was 20F this morning and I rode to work.

tekhna 11-19-08 12:43 PM

Depends on the wind. I rode 15 miles in -10 once, and that wasn't fun at all. It's all about how well I can protect my toes, fingers and nose I guess. And whether the roads are plowed or not.
Truthfully the biggest problem for me is the only time my asthma kicks in anymore is when I'm riding in the cold.

Flatballer 11-19-08 12:46 PM

It doesn't get that cold here, so I dunno.

The one problem I haven't figured out yet is how to keep my glasses from fogging when wearing a balaclava. Any tips? I could buy goggles, but that's expensive.

sharkey00 11-19-08 12:49 PM

I have yet to meet a day that I have been unable to bike. Everything from sub zero to driving rain. There have been days where I have chosen to drive or walk instead of bike but I have never felt unable to bike due to conditions.

kk4df 11-19-08 12:52 PM

It was in the lower 20s this morning, and felt pretty nice to me. I'm here in the south, so not really used to the cold winters. But with several layers and at least one of them wool, I stay pretty comfortable. I still did not wear my Gore Windstopper jacket this morning, but only wore a vest and the long-sleeve layers underneath. If it gets much colder, I will have to add the jacket.

gwchem 11-19-08 12:59 PM

Had a race start last year at 8F, and windy.

Wasn't fun, but you can do it.

Shimagnolo 11-19-08 01:00 PM

It depends on distance.

When I commuted to/from work, it was 7 miles one-way. I did it year-round in CO, and never skipped a ride on account of temperature.

Now I do a hilly, 30-mile course 3-4 times a week, and my limit is ~32F. The biggest issue I have is getting home with the front half of each foot frozen numb. I'm trying neoprene booties this year. We'll see if that make a significant difference.

Don't cover your nose. In through the mouth, this allows the fabric to help warm the air before it hits the lungs. (Freezing the bronchial tubes can be a veeeery bad thing) Then out through the nose, blowing out via the mouth will just make moist warm air go up between the mask and the skin fogging you out. At a light be ready to pull the mask portion down to avoid the fogging as well.

-40C and very windy is my record for riding I suppose.

Apus^2 11-19-08 01:00 PM

Low teens.

What about ice ?!

ZeCanon 11-19-08 01:17 PM

depends. recovery day? I can recover on my couch thanks very much. Important ride? I'll be out there until single digits, at which point I'll hop on my mountain bike.
