The Cervelo Love/Hate Syndrome
I've noticed that people seem rather adamant about Cervelo bicycles. Everybody here seems to have a strong opinion.
They love them, or they hate them. There doesn't seem much in-between.
What's up with that? Discuss.

People who don't have them hate them with a certain envy. For a Cannondale+DuraAce owner a Cervelo+SRAM must be just awful. Especially beats broken DuraAce.

I'm in the middle. But then again, I almost bought an R3. For me it honestly came down to aesthetics and rarity [where I live]. Less people rode Orbeas and I liked the looks of the Opal vs the R3. It was tough decision.

On one hand they're ultra high performance bikes. That in itself is very attractive. On the other hand they're ugly as sin. I'm talkin' just unparalleled in fugliness.
In my opinion.

I beg to differ. Cervelo has invested substantial dollars in their very innovative technology. This technology definitely works according to individuals that have taken test rides on their bikes. Some people refuse to acknowledge it which is fine. With Cervelo's marketplace success, one sees more of them. Some vocal cyclists despise any bike manufacturer that achieves commercial success in selling many bicycles. They would rather see many small struggling manufacturers in the market place for their own reasons. They tend to post their negative thoughts here.

When discovery was dominating, it was love trek or hate trek.
Now CSC is in the front lines all the time, sharing the spotlight with Astana, so the theme has grown to include Cervelo in addition to trek.

Another vote for the Trek - Cervelo correlation. maybe people just get more emotionally involved when it is the top dog bike company. who knows....

That sure was an irritating period. The BF Trek Wars raged seemingly without end... until August 2005. Then everyone started noticing these fugly red and black bikes with the stupid names.
Of course, now is also an irritating period (why do I love BF? Because it gives me such a consistent slow burn...). It's just differently irritating.

Also, the person who dislikes Cervelo's likely have no legs and are just as legless than a Fred with his new $5k bike. I don't know what term would coin them but they are the same individual that's always trying to drop you on a recovery ride.
There was a time when those who had Cervelo's, raced Cervelo's. They were few an far between and the coolest bike you'd ever seen. They just look fast. I can't see how anyone would consider them "fugly" but then again, I think the forks on the Pinarello Prince are ugly and some guys love them.
I ride a Argon Krypton (another Canadian design), and can see the similarities in design. I'm going to guess they modeled the down tube and seat stays from Cervelo ..but that only from comparing the two visually as I really know jack **** about bike frame design.
I wouldn't compare Cervelo to Trek. Perhaps in 5 years once they are even more popular they may sacrifice design and quality for sales but until then I'd place my bets with Cervelo.

stole your bike
I've got nothing against Cervelo, they make good bikes. Most of them are way over what I would ever want to pay for a bike. Most things that become popular almost immediately have detractors and as for Cervelo being the new Trek, I'll believe it when they have an under $2K complete bike. I did see something interesting at the SBR shop in Midtown: an 08 RS with flat bars, panniers, and a big Brooks saddle. It was a complete high end commuter.

In Toronto (or Ontario for that matter), everyone has a Cervelo (their home base, or was). Those Cervelo Hater is the kind of person who is envious of the Fred's who ride them, the Fred who has money to burn without the skill to race such a well made bicycle. The "Cervelo Hater" is also a "those money hater".
I'm a hater, that must make me Fred envious I guess. Or maybe it was the Cervelo that I owned that was a steaming dog turd that formed my opinion.

Cervelo - nice bikes.
Trek - good bikes, but overpriced, and found the Madones (new ones) lacking road feel.
Spec - love the Roubaix, but overpriced.
Look - Like them even more than Cervelo.
BD bikes - great prices, and definitely attractive for the price.
Orbea - never really liked the looks of their bikes.
Why live life with so much hate?

I had a cervelo r2.5 . Best bike I had ever ridden. I thought it looked the part also. Then I rode and 2008 Orbea Orca and love the design. I got one (size 57) and rode it for about 4 months and then got a 54cm 2009 and rode that for a while. great bike but that gap in sizes I could not get comfortable for the long rides. even with my measurements pretty much the same as my previous fits. The bike felt too stiff as well. For me that is. I also could never get past how well the R2.5 rode and felt. So I decided recently to get a R3-SL because Cervelo could not sell me a a R2.5 Bayonne. I must say, I don't think I will ever want a different bike. This bike is perfect. Feels just like my R2.5 but lighter. Also I prefer the look of just black and white. Very comfy and very stiff. IMHO not as stiff as the Orbeas but still, very stiff. perhaps the way I climb the orbeas " feel " stiffer because of the tubing design. i have been fortunate enuff to ride some very nice bikes ( prince, Colnago etc) but the R3-SL feels very much just as capable but the black and white make it look understated which I can appreciate. As much as I am a P'cad hater I look forward to his response to his Soloist when it arrives. I have heard from some that the stiffness of the Soloist can be better compared with the 2009 Orbea Orca. I have no experience with the soloist..
