As as for the third reason, why would I want to follow anyone with an attitude like this? I was genuinely curious and really wanted to learn. And what I learned is that there are no compelling reasons for doing it in my case, since I don't look like a missing link. Why should he want to educate someone who won't educate themselves? This topic has been covered ad nauseum, use the search. |

Correct. I'll tell you a psychology secret:
EVERYTHING in the world is driven by the desire for sex. Everything we do revolves around the desire for sex. Everything other animals do is also motivated by sex. Sex makes the world go 'round. Vanity is just a way to get more sex. So is cycling. And working. And having money. And buying cars. And studying at an institution of higher learning. There isn't a single thing that doesn't relate back to sex. Free life lesson for ya. |
So, if someone asks a repeat question, you can either:
1. Ignore the post, or, 2. PILE ON because it's so FUN! Thanks, guys, I hope you enjoyed yourselves. FreddytheFish- thanks for your answer; it was nice to get a level-headed, rational one. I don't do serious riding for speed. I do it for exercise and commuting and trying to go "car-light". I don't plan on getting any kind of bicycle computer because I think that would take all the fun out of it; I just like the freedom of being out there on a bike. I realize I'll never have the discipline and devote enough time and money to be top-notch. I was just looking for understanding. For those who gave me some, thanks. |

In your professional psychological opinion, does this theory apply to women too? I know a bunch of women that would dispute. But most men I know would probably agree.
like the other guy said above, its all about vanity but who cares, many things are.. |
To "look like a skinny-ass girl"; whadya think?

About the only thing I've been able to teach myself is not to put my arm out on the way down. Even though I've seen plenty of pros do it, with predictable results. |

I'd know. Been there, done both. |

Christmas Eve two years ago I went down on PCH wearing a windbreaker, arm warmers and knickers while riding with some BF guys. I still ended up with road rash, even through all of those layers. The real bummer was that I was going through this super crunchy "au natural" stage where I was letting my leg hair grow out and it was a total pain in the ass to clean the wounds. Kidding. :roflmao2: |
i can barely find the motivation to shave my FACE! also i'm a REALLY hairy dude, so shaving my legs would be a huge pain in the ass.. plus shaved legs feel weird against the fabric of my pants!! also if I get 50th out of 100 in a race, i can say i had an aero disadvantage, plus the guys behind me are like "OH CRAP THE HAIRY LEG DUDE BEAT ME"

So, damn near all of my wrecks were a result of f***ing up a barrel roll or kick flip or whatever, while trying to jump a park bench or the like. Not quite the same as high-siding in a bumpy crit corner. |

If it was about road burn, would you want to basically shave your knees, your elbows, shoulders if need be, and your ass? Every time I've hit the ground, that's what end up hurting. Not my calves or thighs.

Just search. Or you could have just looked at the front page, there was another thread about shaving right there in front of you. I think they were actually next to each other at one point. Get over yourself.

It's tradition.
Guys in the pack will be less likely to trust you if they see that you haven't at least committed to shaving. Road rash - yes...I crashed pretty hard about a month ago wearing bib shorts and overtights. It was still enough to break the skin in several places. Massage - obvious Applying embrocation to the legs - you do NOT want hair there when it comes time to wash that stuff off. If you get to the point of investing in a skinsuit and aero helmet for your time trial rig and still are sporting sasquatch legs, well..... it's certainly possible, but why? |

Shaved legs are hot! |
For me it is fitting in, especially in the upper levels of riding. When you come to a new ride, especially if it is a more competitive ride, and nobody knows you, how do they judge you (at first sight)?
Anybody can buy an expensive bike. They look at your legs. Are you committed enough to shave your legs? Plus, my calves look better shaved. :) |

The reason he got that attitude is the same locker-room mentality that leads to everyone shaving their legs. :D

My wife digs it.

Shaving helps with keeping a good tegaderm seal when you have road rash. Nothing better than waking up in the middle of the night sticking to your sheets and then have your spouse get mad because the sheets have to be changed at 2 am. :)
