Is this a good deal for this Tarmac Expert?

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Is this a good deal for this Tarmac Expert?

Howdy all!

There's a bike shop in my general area that has a 2006 (they said it might be a 2007, but they're pretty sure it's a 2006) Specialized Tarmac Expert, new and on the shelf, that caught my eye. It's exactly my size (a 56cm) and while the weather has prevented me from doing a test ride it felt great on the trainer.

It's full Ultegra with Mavic Ksyrium rims. It's in absolutely fantastic condition (it's unsold, as they said). It looks great and I'm sure it'll be a major improvement from my current Specialized Allez Triple.

They want $1785 for it. They think it'll still be around in early January when I'll have the funds for a purchase. If they do, and assuming the test-ride(s) comes out well, is this a worthy price? This is cheaper than what I could pay for a 105-equipped 2008 Tarmac, to say nothing of a 2009.

If the frame isn't different from yours, then just buy an ultegra groupset for 600 bucks...

It's a full carbon frame versus my entry-level aluminum Allez.

I think that is a good deal, but I would still ask them to throw in something else...Free helmet, bibs, whatever.

An 07 Expert was going for around $3000MSRP I believe....That is a pretty good deal...

As far as I can remember, the 06 and 07 Expert frames were basically the same. They didn't change them until the 08 model came out. At that point they went to the Az1 construction...I got one...Great bike!

Sounds like a great deal to me. I have an '09 and I paid a lot more than your offer. Of course a few years of engineering help with the higher price I paid, but either way it's a great bike.

Yes, they will. I may have to do that to make sure it doesn't disappear. I've got a line on a 2008 Trek Madone 4.5 for $1770 which I'm also considering. The Tarmac has better components, but I'll try to test ride them both. Each shop is about 40 miles from home, though in different directions.

The LBS had a 08 for $1800 recently and it was your size...

Unfortunately it was my size too.
