Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Pinarello Asolo

I just picked this up on a semi-impulse and I'm having a heck of a time finding info on this frameset and tubing. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

I believe this is a late 1990's frame, possibly 1997 if one can go by the last two digits of the serial number.

Dedacciai Dolmen tubes are proprietary to Pinarello and roughly equivalent to Columbus ?, SL?

How about geometry? I’m hoping for more of a long distance bike rather than a “must pay attention at all times” bike.

Also, any recommendations on a build up? I was thinking older Chorus or new Centaur alloy, but not sure on the wheels and other details.

My vote:
-new centaur alloy, just because it's easier to find
-mavic op or reflex/record hubs
-bars-classic bend (duh)
-deda 100 stem (silver)
-campy seatpost (not carbon)

Seriously considering 2009 Centaur and will probably go with some pre-built wheels. Still debating if I should use a quill stem or not.

Silver wheels will be a bit harder to find. You could try Campagnolo Khamsins (black) or Miche Racing wheels. Record hubs only come in black and only in 32 holes now. You might still find 07 Veloce or Centaur hubs, which are both silver. Personally, I'd consider 08 Veloce in silver, simply because it's very cheap. Otherwise, I'd get 09 Centaur. As for the seatpost, the only Campagnolo post that's not carbon is the Centaur post. Those are not that easy to find. Maybe you could consider a basic Kalloy one? They are quite well finished.

I have a similar bike, a '97 Pinarello Vuelta. https://www.bikepedia.com/QuickBike/B...elta&Type=bike Pinarello ARX steel tubing (made by Deda for Pinarello), lugged, chromed fork crown and chainstay, deep electric blue in color, white graphics. The bike was apparently purchased as a frameset originally, and built up with Shimano 600 parts.

Long story involving trades, bartering, etc. but I ended up with the frame and fork (traded back the Shimano 600 parts), and built it up with '09 Campy Centaur, compact double, all alloy. I built wheels around the Centaur hubs, Open Pro rims, all silver. Stem and handlebars Cinelli (silver). '09 Chorus pedals, Thomson seatpost (silver), San Marco Concor saddle (white) Cinelli bar tape (white). I'm running Vittoria Open Corsa tires on it (white/black).

The bike is unbelievable. Congratualations on yours, and good luck with it-

What size is the frame? I like the chrome on the rear triangle.

Veloce 9sp, Mavic MA2 32 - 3x, 3ttt stem, Deda bar, Campagnolo seatpost, Flite saddle.

Your frame is slightly different, mine only has chromed left chainstay, and your fork has a different crown.

Beautiful frame. Reminds me a bit of my Daccordi built up with '06 Centaur.

I bought my wife a new Pinarello Asolo in 1988 that was black with pink decals and had a lugged frame. The only thing that I remember about hers was that it had really tight criterium geometry. In fact, that was why she sold it a couple years later. It was a killer on long rides.

In terms of aesthetics, the new fat Campy doesn't compare to the liquid aero-look Campy of yore. I built up a red NOS 93 nivachrome Viner last winter with a period Record, Chorus, and Athena mix with tubulars and it is really a svelte looking and riding machine. The aero Chorus seatpost and Athena brakes are works of art. Frame and all were only about $700, mostly from Ebay. The one concession I made to modernity is a silver Veloce CT crank for the Appalacian foothills around here.

Wow, this thread really came back to life!

Well Biked - Thanks for the pictures, your bike looks great!

55/Rad - That Daccordi is beautiful and an inspiration for my build!

Sced - I was hoping for more of a century geometry, but when I contacted Gita for some info on the frame, they told me that all of the steel bikes of the late 90's era had the same Pinarello race geometry and that the steel weight/stiffness was really the only difference between models.

So here's an update on the build... I've ordered an 09 Centaur groupset and some Campy Neutron wheels. I know the wheels are black, but the price was right. I've heard nothing but praise about them and they're fairly light in support of my hope to get the bike under 20 lbs.

Questions...

Yellow or white tape and saddle???

Does anyone know if the fork is English or Italian tread? I was going to use a Record headset and all I can find is English tread.
