This is why I don't weigh myself.

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

This is why I don't weigh myself.

I go to the doctor today. Not because I want to go, but because they insist on seeing me in person to give me the Lipitor refill. Whatever. My blood work is dandy, my cholesterol numbers are like the American Cardiologist Association Poster Boy, but they still have to see me. OK. I go in.

First they take my BP (120/80, 60bpm)

Then they stethoscope me (I appear to be OK)

Then they ASK ME TO GET ON THE SCALE. Crap. 'Must we do this?' I ask. 'Yes' they respond.

Sigh.

I get up there. 192 lbs. with my shoes and clothes on. I wanted to kill myself. After the P.A. left I took off my sneakers and unloaded some crap from my pockets and secretly re-weighed myself in a desperate attempt to mitigate the load. 189 lbs. I figure I must be 185-186 lbs.

Don't ask me how I gain all this weight. My goal for race season is 168lbs. I don't think I got below 173 or so this summer. It's getting harder as I get older. Much harder. And I don't really look that heavy. Not at all. My clothes fit fine, etc. Go figure. Hey, if I'm 175-185 riding 12K miles annually, I'm reasonably confident I'd be 190-200 if I did not.

But that's the bad news. The good news is if I ever get close to my goal, man o man o man you are all in Big Friggin Trouble. Because I'm not riding so bad right now at this weight.

To make it worse, I run into my cycling pal Art at the supermarket later. I ask him how much he's weighing these days. 153 lbs. He's only 1" shorter than me. I have 32 lbs on him. That's ridiculous.

On the other hand, I do drop him on the hills. So I have that going for me.

When I graduated high school I weighed 135 lbs. Oh well. That ship has friggin sailed. But I really look reasonably lean. My daughter's friends think I'm too skinny.

You're not fat. You're pleasingly plump.

Maybe if you weighed yourself a little more often, you wouldn't let yourself get so freakin' fat

Weight means nothing. What's your body mass index? Get a skinfold if you don't know. I'm 20 lbs over weight for my weight/age but I have around 12.5 BMI. Super low. I'm in great shape, I just have more muscle that to be expected for my frame size.

It gets tougher keeping weight off as you get older, something I find a bit annoying. Before I used to drop weight pretty quickly as I ramped up my training but now it takes more effort. Needless to say I curbed my usual pig-out for Thanksgiving. When I rode a lot I made it down to 139lbs (I'm 5'8") and everyone said I looked like I needed to spend some time at McDonald's, now I'm hover between 155-160. Take a break from the self loathing for a bit, it's just weight and if it isn't affecting your riding then don't worry about it. Ok back to your self-loathing, we can't have you get all warm and fuzzy on us.

I've always called it round muscle
Heck one morning before a ride I see the scale so I get on it reads 165lbs. I go for a 40mi ride that took 2:10min drank almost 2 bottles of water got home and stood on the scale I gained 3 lbs? now I was 163lbs. what's up with that? But I am over 50 does that matter?

In a couple of months, I hope to be down to my high school weight. (In 2005 I got all the way down to 168 and people wondered whether I had cancer.) Oh, and for comparison... I'm 6'-2".

I'm sure you could drop me on a hill too. I did my fastest ever commute today- right at 30 minutes for the 7.5 miles (on a hybrid bike).

Wishful thinking....by riding 12K a year your probably burning about 160 lbs worth of (fat) calories.....although I know it doesn't work like that
