Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

It eventually got to 46.4 C (115.5 F) today - hottest Melbourne day on record!

When it gets that hot my window air conditioner quits working. The pressures get so high it trips the circuit breaker. Last summer we didn't get that high, though, at least not where I live. When I lived 20 miles north of here temps of 115 were common and 95-100 late at night, too. It sucks when you go outside and the heat almost knocks you down.

Won't have that problem today as it's raining. I'm thinking about driving to the snow and doing some snow biking. Unfortunately the snow level is pretty high with this storm, maybe 6000 feet.

That heat didn't help the fire situation just north of Melbourne. Last night Rowan, and all his neighbors, were evacuated. Rowan left amid fires threatening to engulf his home. As far as we can tell so far, the valley where he lived has been destroyed, including his place and several towns. It has been a very long night.

I read the snow level is supposed to drop to <5000 either today or Monday's rain. You might get your wish after all!

I'll be at work on Monday so that's out.
Ended up just riding from here for a couple hours because I thought it was going to rain. It didn't, but last night's rain caused a lot of small mud flows around the 'hood. Some of the neighbors were digging out their yards.

To hell with this snowbound roadie stuff.

Got out for 50 miles today, including one of my favorite climbs - a 4 mile, gentle, winding climb thru the woods with a great view from the top.

What's a few ice patches and a lot of gravel? No one crashed, and only one flat in the group. Not bad.

A good day. 30F at the start, mid-40's at the finish. It was spectacularly beautiful - snow-covered fields, blue haze over the hills... Yup.

Some small towns to the northeast of Melbourne have been completely destroyed by these fires. It was beautiful cycling country out there. Was.

Doing pretty good, <3. Had a tiring but enjoyable day, drove down to the big city to watch my son at a track meet. It was fun. Was at the same track arena I used to run at when I was in high school. Brought back memories. Good day.

That sounds nice, Beth . . . you know it's ok to bring your camera with you when you bike.

I think this season I'm going to take a camera with me most every ride. I'll be flooding the forum with photos . .. nice scenery, of course.

No ... it's not particularly. Rowan's alive, and he managed to save some of his stuff. But everything else is gone, and it's starting to look like they may have to evacuate the town where they evacuated everyone to.

Yes ...... including where Rowan lived. Marysville, right up the road from where he lived, has been razed. I watched video of it, and didn't recognize it. They're still fighting the fire where he lived.

I'm sorry to hear that Machka. At least Rowan is alive which is a tiny sliver of good news.

Very true, there are 36 confirmed dead with fears of more.

Scratch that, make it 65 dead. Faark.

He has no insurance, but lived in a rental. He managed to save quite a bit of his stuff including most of his bicycles and camping gear ... so he'll go back to living in a tent for now.

There are 93 confirmed dead now, and the fires are still burning.

Machka,

Haven't heard an update for a couple of days. How are you doing? How is Rowan doing?

Rowan is still all right.

But the fires there in the state of Victoria have been ranked in the top 5 worst fires in the world in the last 150 years. 400,000 hectares have been burned (another stat says 3000 kilometers), over 1000 homes have been lost, and the death count is at 181 people. In addition to that, over 10,000 animals have been killed.

The fires are still burning ... it is far from over. Rowan's area is still on high alert. He managed to make it back out to where his house was, and it is gone. There is nothing salvageable in the house. All the rest of the houses on the settlement there are also gone. The fire was so intense that most things have been burnt right down to ash, not even a recognizeable trace of them left. Even the ground (the dirt) has been burnt.

I've been to many of the places I see in the news or on the lists of active fires. They were beautiful, and I was looking forward to seeing them again. But now they're gone.

I'm sorry to hear about the loss of property and animals. It is good news that Rowan is alright. You are both in my thoughts and I hope that he is able to get re-established and back on his feet again quickly.

Have watched a couple of episodes of this while riding this week. Interesting show. Find myself closing my eyes so I can focus on listening to the music...very nice.
