I train with my trainer outside the porch or barn even when it is cold. The reason I am using the trainer is that I missed riding during the day or I am taking care of kids. I do not have a man den per se, in fact I do have a proper garage or basement. I do not really watch TV. How is it a torture chamber when it looks comfy?

recneps345 12-07-08 03:14 PM

Do most of you guys have a bike that you just dedicate to leaving on the trainer? The reason I ask is I have one road bike and a Kurt Kinetic trainer that I never use. I have thought about picking up an old trek road bike that is at my bike shop for $175 and just leaving it on the trainer in my basement.

Dubbayoo 12-07-08 03:23 PM

one bike, dedicated rear wheel.

Torture chamber for front wheels, more like it. Jayzus, these pics are painful to look at. It's bad for the wheels to sit there under stress in just one position all the time. This is why wheels are meant to spin. Don't you guys know anything?

At least UnsafeAlpine got that aspect of it right a few posts above. But more properly, here's what you do: you buy a cheap-arse steel frame for $40 via Craigslist, put a half-decent spare rear wheel on it with one of those "trainer tires" from Germany (they work, they're good), get a rack hitch to attach your forks to, put it on some kind of home-made stand, and there you are.

I would knock that frame over with out-of-saddle sprints. It would hurt.

If my wheel can take hitting potholes at 20 mph head on I am really not to worried about it sitting stationary. In 5 years of trainer riding I have yet to have a wheel go out of round.....

Grumpy McTrumpy 12-07-08 05:45 PM

I suppose a case could be made that it would brinell the wheel bearing races, but I haven't seen it happen.

Jesus. I guess I never knew how insane roadies were. What did I get myself into?

No "chamber" should be without one....

and at this point I'd like to do just about anything to derail the front wheel torture angle just interjected to this thread.

I imagine it would be easier to play the French Horn on the bike instead of a Tuba, no?

No, you wouldn't.

Without getting into the specific mechanics of it, two things: 1) an individual blow like hitting a pothole isn't comparable to a consistent load in one place over long periods of time; 2) the wheel is spinning when you hit the pothole anyway, so the blow glances off of the wheel somewhat. This is why hitting a pothole isn't the same as taking a sledgehammer to a wheel when it's stationary. (not to say that potholes can't ruin wheels, of course).

Yeah, probably not much will happen to the wheel, but on the other hand I don't like the idea of putting so much weight on just one or two spokes for long periods of time.

I think we need a vid from airosen to establish that.

I would attempt playing an oboe or bassoon on my trainer, but double reeds are sharp and I like to save my mouth. Brass mouthpiece don't have sharp edges.

Wow, that is one nice setup! I might actually ride my trainer if I had a TV that big!

Another thread to hate the SoCal riders

This is what it looks like at PCH all year round.
