Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Pics of today's ride, and a couple of newbie questions.

I thought I would share some pics of today's ride for any of you that may be interested. I rode from the port of san luis to the outskirts of Pismo. The ride was just under 25 miles. I know this is not much for most of you, but it is one of my longer rides to date.

As far as the questions go, I was wondering how often you guys was your cycling gear? I currently was my shorts, socks, and base layer after every ride, but am wondering how often I should was the rest of my stuff i.e. gloves, beenie, booties, jeresy, arm and knee warmers, etc. Right now I was these things about once a week, but even with this regiment my beenie is starting to stink. So I think I may need to start washing everything after every ride. Please let me know what you guys do.

Thank you.

Cool pics. I wish i lived where you do. Regrettably, I haven't seen a hill that big on my bike. I really need to get out of Indiana. And I know to most of you those hills or mountains or whatever you call them aren't that big.

Do people actually read the questions? He was asking about the other stuff... like gloves etc. Clothes after each ride, other stuff when needed. I do a wash once a week, where I do socks, arm warmers, gloves, etc. along with all my kits. I of course have enough clothes and socks to wear something different throughout the week. I have several sets of arm and knee warmers but usually once a week for the gloves is fine.

I don't wear a "beanie", can't help you there...

wash on gentle cycle, turn the jersey inside out and fully zip the zipper if it has graphics on it.

air dry if you have the time, otherwise lo-temp / gentle in the dryer.

I wash stuff like arm/leg warmers, headbands, tights, etc about once a week usually. That's just when I happen to do laundry.

As for gloves, I dunno, whenever they get really dirty or I notice the smell. Not very often though. Especially my lobster gloves because I can't turn them inside out and they take forever to dry.

And I wash all my cycling gear on the cold cycle and then air dry it.

Wash the beanie after every ride.

Baselayer, jersey, bibs or shorts and beanie get washed after every ride. Vest, jacket, warmers and gloves get washed as needed.

If you ride a lot, after a few years you'll probably end up with enough clothes and gloves so you can rotate them.

Great pics, ah you California boys and your perpetual nice weather. Now I could be wrong but looking at those pics it seems like that should be ss jersey and shorts weather to me, not sure where the beanie, gloves and warmers come in unless you live in the mountains. I was just about everything after each ride except my gloves and jacket.

Don't you yearn for the challenge or riding in 20ºF temps with 20 mile per hour wind and icy patches?

I want to live where the OP lives. I rode in around 35-40 degrees F today, with 25mph winds. No icy patches yet, thank God. But the temp is dropping to < 20 overnight. Sigh...

Pictures can be misleading... it usually looks like that, but it can still be in the 40s. Not saying that's cold, but at least arm/knee warmer weather

I can't read, just look at the good pics.
You might be a real cutie in a beanie.

Great photos. I wash everything each use, but I have accumulated a bunch of arm warmer, hats, gloves, so it is no problem for me. If you can't wash all with each ride, I would wash the bib and base layer stuff, and wash the rest as soon as possible. Regardless, enjoy the nice weather, keep riding.

IMO there is no good reason to wash gloves after each ride

To each his own, but I wipe my nose a lot, my nose runs all the time, ergo, I wash them. I am already washing my bibs, so what is the problem, it does not take any more time/resources to just throw the gloves in there.

I guess my gloves just don't get as dirty as yours then. I don't have 10 pairs of gloves to wear a different pair after each ride between washes. Especially long finger gloves during the colder times of the year.

I basically rotate 3 pairs of gloves and wash them all every other week.

TRANSLATION: I disagree with you, I am absolutely right, so any different opinion or suggestion is wrong.

I simply responded to the OP with an honest opinion. Obviously, since it was not YOUR opinion, you implicitly disagree with it. From the photos, I doubt the OP has to wear lots of long finger winter gloves. But, I wash my summer gloves every ride, too.

Calm down. I never said you were wrong, just giving my reasons why I don't wash my gloves after every ride.
