Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

If Critical Mass is awful because it creates traffic one Friday per month, than think about how terrible Rush Hour is!

Not to mention visits to the city from heads of state, presidential motorcades, the United Nations when it's in session, every day construction, et cetera.

Haven't ridden CM in a long time, but I remember in NYC when it was a fun ride, thousands of people, with cops just eyeinng everybody warily. And ccorkinng. It's a real drag what's happened in the past four and a half years. Too many people became jerks, starting with the police violence.

By the way, the dude who was tackled by that cop has come across in everything I've read as a completely stand-up person, who's dealing with this with poise and grace.

My a-hole ratio is skewed since I know at least 1 cool cyclist and ZERO cool cops.
That leaves one side at a 100% "a-hole factor."

When he blocks traffic I think the president is an a-hole as well. jesus, do any of you people work? work & commute? after a 90 minute commute in, a ten hour work day, the last thing I want is some self important a-hole cramming his agenda into my way home to my kid or my bike.

You are remembering incorrectly. I haven't gone back to re-read the thread because I'm lazy. But what happened was that almost immediately after the thread started, there were a couple people who posted things like "I hate ****ing pigs."

So what you saw was not someone jumping to that cops defense, but calling out the red-headed liberal arts student riding around on his Orbea, indignant that the man is always harassing him. That likely trustafarian (trust fund rebel) deserved to get called out.

Yes, 3-4 "people". Hardly a majority voice.

Do you expect everyone to agree with you? Roadies haters in commuting and fixie forum said the same crap you're saying about roadies siding with the cops, until one or two posters told these people to actually read the thread and count the posters siding with the cop. Most people here condone both the cop and CM. What the cop did was cross the line, but it doesn't justify the actions of CM in the first place.

As a car free person, please take your anti-car vitriol somewhere else, like the car free forum, roadies here don't give a damn and this is not the place to spew your anti-car agenda. CM impedes everybody, not just the people in cars.

It is not up to the cop to decide if cm should take place. His job is to enforce law correctly. He did not do it. In this instance he got caught and the media got to grips with it. This is why he is why he is being lynched.

I saw no gesture from the cop for the rider to stop, never do you see him put out a hand in a typical cop type pose and say "stop in the name of the law" he simply edges towards one of the hundreds of people riding past and decides to attack him and strong arm him off of his bicycle, not only that, but he claimed that the cyclist "charged" him and he charged the cyclist whom he assulted with, among other things, assult! Oh the irony. . These are the people put in charge of protecting us and upholding the laws and values of our country and all this fellow seems to want to do is to injure some poor innocent kid casually riding a bicycle with his friends. If I must say anything, thank god for people with cameras, if it were not for that person video taping it would have been another case of police brutality going un-checked.[B I hope this cop gets the same punishment that any man who attacks a cyclist would ge[/B]t.
Wrong. The cop should intact get a STRONGER penalty than a civilian would get. Why? Because when a civilian commits a crime against a cop, begets a worse penalty than if he commuted the same crimeagainst another civilian. Similarly the cop should get a tougher penalty since he abused his position of TRUST and HONESTY.

this irritates me. no one attempted to make that assertion.

people are allowed to ride in the street in nyc, believe it or not. in fact, the nypd is almost always aware that the cm is going to happen, and posts officers along the route to monitor (not stop) the bikers. do you think the cops were just there randomly? there was even an nyc councilwoman (rosie mendez) that participated after nyc tried to require 50+ person permits. side note: the only reason there have been tickets is because of this new 50+ person permit law and the occasional trouble maker, not because people are riding their bikes in the street. it isn't like cm is considered a terrible crime in nyc. it's just part of the show. (notice how the biker's charges were all dropped while the cop was indicted?) what the cop did was wrong. what the biker did is at worst a nuissance, and certainly not to the level of striking someone down.

basically, the guy was riding on the steet. the worst you can nab him for is failure to have a permit. that is a ticketable offense. the cop shoved a guy down, then arrested him, then made false accusations in order to save his ass. please do not compare the two.

thing is, cops can be dicks, but they also 'protect and serve.'

cm, on the other hand, are just dicks.

You're undermining your position by talking this way.

If you're an ideal spokesperson for CM, no wonder people loathe them so much.

CM doesn't have leaders or spokespeople. i'm just a guy on a bike, and only speak for myself. just like i don't expect anyone on BF to speak for the mainstream.
