NYC Police Officer to be Indicted

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

NYC Police Officer to be Indicted

The NYC police officer who took down a cyclist in the Critical Mass ride in NYC this summer will be indicted. See this NYTimes article for details. There's a link to the YouTube video in the article.

It'll be interesting to see what charges are brought.

I have not heard if the officer's father, a retired NYPD detective, retracted his early statement "You gotta do what you gotta do to make an arrest". If not, a thorough evaluation of HIS actions, including statements under oath, needs to occur.

You better believe, if I ever find myself on a jury, this incident will come to mind when listening to a cop's testimony.

That's good to know. Of the cops that I've met, the older ones that were in the military when they were younger have always said they think they would have made terrible cops if they had started when they were younger.

Thank god, it is sad to see the things people can get away with in positions of power, regardless of whether he gets convicted of anything, it is good to see that this issue was not swept under the rug. I saw the video when it first surfaced and it was completely uncalled for and unprofessional . I saw no gesture from the cop for the rider to stop, never do you see him put out a hand in a typical cop type pose and say "stop in the name of the law" he simply edges towards one of the hundreds of people riding past and decides to attack him and strong arm him off of his bicycle, not only that, but he claimed that the cyclist "charged" him and he charged the cyclist whom he assulted with, among other things, assult! Oh the irony. . These are the people put in charge of protecting us and upholding the laws and values of our country and all this fellow seems to want to do is to injure some poor innocent kid casually riding a bicycle with his friends. If I must say anything, thank god for people with cameras, if it were not for that person video taping it would have been another case of police brutality going un-checked. I hope this cop gets the same punishment that any man who attacks a cyclist would get.

I rarely defend cops. Midwestern cops have a severe attitude problem-- read: nothing better to do. I know in theory there are good cops out there, but I have yet to meet a single one in Nebraska or Iowa. Like pcad's Cervelo.
Yes, I'm bitter.

Really? How? I would find it hard for a police officer to defend that cop, let alone a cyclist. Did the not see the hundreds of other people riding past? Or the way the cyclist almost ran into the curb trying to get around the cop? Or the way the cop slowly paced into the path of the cyclist before stiff-arming him into the pavement? Completely uncalled for by anyone, let alone a police officer.

Actually it seems to be that if a few cops belted a few more T.A. idiots NY City would be a better place. Just sayin'.

Yeah that video was upsetting. There's always going to be some yahoo out there who hates you just because you're on a bicycle.

News Flash: 90% of the world hates you because you're on a bicycle. The best part about this stupid place is it appears that 90% of BFers are oblivious to this reality. Of course, if they weren't, they wouldn't go out in public looking like that. And even if you're aware of this, it does require a huge amount of either denial or apathy about the world's opinion of your image. Obviously I'm very in touch with the latter sentiment. That being said the world can go F itself.

Never underestimate the number of sheep in society blindly willing to support figures of authority. I remember that thread; it was ridiculous.

Does anyone else feel that critical mass rides serve no purpose other than pissing off the motorists who already don't like us very much?

I do.

I don't get the point of CM. Lets piss off all the motorists so the people who actually ride by themselves year round are the ones that get mowed down when they 'obstruct' a motorist who is tired of CM'ers.

I feel that sometimes the CM crowd goes a bit too far. That being said, I don't feel that the cops reaction was warranted at all. Responding in this way just creates a more hostile environment and nobody wins in those cases.

i'd guess that impatient drivers have been mowing down cyclists ever since cars were invented.

with or without CM, it's just the way it is.
