Winter's here. Anybody getting fat?

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Lost about 8-10 lbs in the past few weeks.... down to 118 lbs.

Stress, not the bike.

I've put on a couple pounds since my bike went to the trainer (mid-November). I've been running some, but have taken the last week or so off owing to a little achilles flare up. It's good now, but the temps are so cold* that I'm having a little motivational trouble.

currently 4F and -11F wind chill....I am wussy.

Your intake should go up but not to the point that you gain weight....

I've actually lost weight. Although its probably because I'm back home and eating much healthier. Also its been about 50~ degrees each day and with no job/school for three weeks that means I can go biking a lot more.

I am disgusted and frustrated with myself. First, in Oct there was a cruise with all the eating.. Nov. Belated German Octoberfest beer halls for several days. Then a trip to family in Michigan, taking me off the bike.. I don't want to know how much I gained... Now, I'm again near my bikes and it's rained for 4 days.. The worst, the mental impact of not being on the bike. Too bad the dour mood makes other family members uncomfortable.. The wifey is anxious for me to get in those miles.

Been losing weight during finals. Always forget to eat =( But now it's break so Ive got time for both eating and riding! Hopefully the wind/cold can cooperate with the riding or I'll just be home eating...

Putting a few pounds on over Winter helps keep me warmer. I hate having cold Kidneys.

Yep. 11 lbs so far, but I hope to keep most of it. Last summer at 133, being 5'11, I started looking scary, so I'm welcoming the weight.

Although I detest the term Clydesdale, I am in that range until next summer. With the early evenings and uncharacteristically cool and wet weather I've not been able to ride as I would like. I have an exercise bike that I force myself to use on occasion, but I can't stand the mindless boredom of pedaling to nowhere. Luckily with some breaks in the weather I've been getting some miles in here and there.

to answer, I have managed to keep my weight nice and level so far this winter. In the mid to lower 220's. Yeah it's a lot, but nothing near the 250 when I started riding in July. If the weather holds like it is and stays warm, I'll probably be able to pop under 220 with 2 weeks off.

Trundling around Cambridgeshire in foul weather on a fixed isn't known to encourage weight gain. If it did I'd be glad of the insulation.

I've gained about 5 # since early November. I had a week-long seminar with lots of hotel food, then Thanksgiving, then in December a lot of ugly weather, and not HTFU enough to use the trainer. Plus around 10 nights in a row of singing, for our holiday concert series and some other local events. My Trek, sitting there ready to go, looks lonely and neglected.

I've stayed the same, plus or minus 3 pounds or so.

I commute to work by bike three or four times a week, and work is 9 miles + 4 miles (with a train ride in between) each way. If I'm not doing that, I have to walk at least a mile or two to catch a bus, depending on whether I ride the bus both times or not.

I also do yoga and go the gym sometimes, and my diet hasn't changed (no holiday treats or extra eating; I really couldn't tolerate it anymore anyway).

In general I am doing a whole hell of a lot better than previous years. I am still at an all time off-season low, but I am about 3-4 lbs above where I was before Thanksgiving.

I started lifting which could be hurting me in that respect.

I only hope to come into the full on season in the 160's (at least 3-8 lbs lighter than now).

Lifting hasnt hurt me so far. In fact I think it's been helping. I've noticed that my knees dont hurt from standing and hard seated climbing. If all I ever get from doing weights is strengthened joints, than its worth it. Key for me has been lighter weight and more reps.

Down 4 lbs so far this winter. I hope to lose about 4 more by mid January and stay there heading into the '09 racing season.

By the way, I'm hungry.

I agree it's helping, but it's just that I'm of very stocky German descent...lifting has a tendancy to add bulk on quickly. I have been trying to keep it light with high reps.

I just had another Christmas cookie. I need an intervention. I'd call Oprah, but well, she's not one to give advice lately.

Agreed. I'm trying to turn myself into a sprinter and I have to stop neglecting the upper body for pulling hard on the bars.
