Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

It's not the bicycles that get so much negative attention in Tennessee, it's the garishly colored clothing many cyclists prefer to wear that provoke these gentle country folk.
In that part of the world, only Nascar drivers are expected to dress with such flamboyance.

Sounds to me like Tennessee is doing as well as Belgium.

How about we post every time we did not get some attention from an ignorant driver? Just to put the number of incidents in perspective.

Nearly all of my rides are without incidents; probably better than what happens when I'm driving, actually.
We get stuff thrown out here in California too and I wouldn't mind at at all riding in Tennessee for a week. My friend moved there and the pics are beautiful.

I agree. Tennessee (parts of it) is beautiful. I'm from KY, but I went to college in TN (northwest). Eastern TN is gorgeous, but western TN is like western KY...very blah! Alas, I wasn't a cyclist when I lived in that area though.

the term "redneck" is considered by many to be offensive and racist.

I had lot's of problems with people harassing me. Since I switched over to the trainer earlier this month, though, the incidents are way down.

I wonder if it's seasonal?

Odd....incidents for me are way up on the trainer. Kids won't leave me alone. Granted, they don't throw things at me...well, only the 8-year old.
