Saying Goodbye to my Babies

Due to the crappy economy, the fact I'm only working one day per week or so, and the fact that I need more room in my house, I've had to list 2 of my babies on eBay. While I hope they sell, I'm really gonna miss them. :(

How do you cope with selling off bikes that you've grown attached to?

waterrockets 12-19-08 04:36 PM

I'm in it for the soul crushing. I don't much care what's under me if it's not holding me back. Bikes are tools. You just sold some expensive screwdrivers.

pdedes 12-19-08 04:36 PM

bikes are tools.

Hammertoe 12-19-08 04:44 PM

Ha...

I consider cars tools...

I have often said my car is like a fork...

My bikes, however, I have more of an attachment....

triplebutted 12-19-08 04:46 PM

After 25+ years and just about as many bikes, I'm NEVER attached to any of them.

55/Rad 12-19-08 04:52 PM

I can understand the emotional connection.

When you take the time some of us do to plan and execute a special build, especially one with older and more unique qualities, it's easy to get attached to it.

If I pay 3000$ for something I'll be attached to it in a way for sure.

Bikes are not different.

The only exeption is taxes...

jmio 12-19-08 05:00 PM

your good man, gives people like me,(college kid that can't afford new bike costs) a chance at having stuff for cheap. I got my bike for 500, it was valued at 3400$. Your just keeping the rotation of ownership going. I'm all about it!

Tools, not jewels.

How do you do it? How do you stay detached? I still regret, to this day, selling my 1978 Nishiki Competition.

Hammertoe 12-19-08 05:09 PM

I regret telling my parents to get rid of my 1982 Peugeot Super Competition...

It was pearl green with orange lettering...

Why...

Why...

Why...

RacerOne 12-19-08 05:12 PM

PlatyPius, I live next door in Brazil... what are you selling?

ThinLine 12-19-08 05:16 PM

I have bought and sold bikes like the commodity that they are. They are not your little puppy............
.........although I did buy my first real racing bike back in 1991 that I just cannot part with and never will.
A Basso Lotto, columbus SLX steel frame, full campy record w/ delta brakes, campy yipsolon wheels, selle italia mythos saddle, time criterium pedals, cenelli xa black stem. Bought it from colorado cyclist and paid approx. $3000.00 for it. Showroom condition.

I don't understand an attachment to dogs...

They are just poop machines...

We have two cats...

I do not know their names...

One is black...

One is gray...

I ignore them...

They ignore me...

They serve no purpose except to leave hair around the house...

BMonei 12-19-08 05:53 PM

a recessions possession is a confession of regression

I feel for you brother! Hope this economy gets back on its feet so you can get your babies back! Or get new babies ... ;)

Your "Bike #2" is one of the bikes that I'm selling - assuming yours is a late model one. I built mine with Ultegra though, since that's what we had laying around. lol

I don't purport to be worthy of such status as you hold here Rad, but I'd agree wholeheartedly with that.

Same here, PM me with a link to your auctions and I'll pass it to my friends at school looking for bikes.

Yep, I actually like cars that have a vinyl floor covering. What do you need carpet for your every day vehicle?

Sprocket Man 12-19-08 07:06 PM

I've never had that problem because I've never sold a bike. I've given a couple of bikes away, though. If I have one that I haven't ridden in a while and I find someone who could use a bike but doesn't have the means to buy a decent one, I'll usually part with it. But instead of feeling sad, I feel good. Almost like my baby grew up and left home to do something worthwhile.

Kai Winters 12-19-08 07:06 PM

I too have had approx a dozen bikes and while I missed some of them it did not bother me to sell them. They are just the means to the end. You can always get another bike but a memorable ride may last forever.

Well written. In the next year or so, I'm planning on purchasing a new bike. Looking to spend around $2000-$2500. I couldn't see myself becoming attached to it. But if I were to build a bike from the frame up, I could see myself having an attachment to it.

patentcad 12-19-08 07:20 PM

I don't get attached to bikes.
