I dunno, that looks exactly like a wheel that took a stick in the spokes, damage to spoke surfaces or not. I took a stick in the spokes of my MTB and it looked exactly like that, no scratches on the spokes either.

For comparison purposes this was ABSOLUTELY a stick in the spokes at 20mph. The nipple pulled through the eyelet on one, and just split the nipple on the other. If I didn't have a 32 spoke (2x laced) front wheel, and the eyelets weren't there, I can see pulling the first spoke w/o slowing much, the 2nd to follow quickly (no eyelet) and then from there the 3rd bends, collapsing under the weight of me, which detensions the rest of the spokes and all hell breaks loose.

Aluminium Crusader :-)
It failed on a 65ºF September morning going up a steep grade, I was probably putting out about 400 watts at the time. Fortunately I was going about 8 mph, so I didn't fall that heavily. I had a swollen/sore arm and hand for a couple of weeks, no broken bones. Didn't bother fighting with Shimano over warranty, just purchased a new crank from PBK (D.A. 7800) for <$200.

An update:
1. I've just gotten my bike back. Looks like both shifters are badly scratched, since I had hit the ground with handlebars turned fully to the right. Road rash is scabbing up nicely.
2. LBS was nice to lend me a loaner front wheel, since Shimano Singapore had been dragging their feet regarding the exchange and it wouldn't be ready any time soon.
3. Shimano Singapore had not replied to any of my emails.
4. I had called Shimano Singapore, got dumped from department to department twice, only to be told that the person in charge was not in the office. They had not called back since. You just gotta love Singaporean bureaucracy.
5. Rear wheel is now about 2mm untrue. 2 of the spokes are over-tensioned, which is peculiar.
