Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

So I went to use my trainer...

and the resistance unit fell off!

I took a closer look at the "L bolt" and plastic resistance knob, both threads are stripped out. Go figure, it's -2 and a WC of -18, so no ride today. A 30 second call to Kurt, parts will be sent out, no questions. Props to Kurt Kinetic, this is the 2nd time I've called with an issue, both times, a real person answers, no questions or arguing, just fixed the problem.

Still, would've been nice to ride today, it's too cold to go for a short run. Yeah, and 3-5" snow overnight. Can't wait for Spring.

The same thing happened to me last winter. The parts were replaced, no questions asked.

In a pinch, while I waited I replaced the L bolt with an eye bolt and a straight bolt. Worked just as well.

The threads on the L bolt take a lot of shear force in only one small section of the bolt. This is definitely a weak link in an overall well built unit.

The parts on my cycle ops are steel and they stripped too. Replaced and now they have done it again. I'm stuck with rollers for now.

Based on the response from the KK service person, I would guess they see this problem frequently, she knew exactly what the problem was before I was done telling her. I got 2 winters out of it before the threads stripped.

Rod-thanks for the input. I was going to venture to the hardware store today looking for some temporary jerry rig parts, the eye bolt sounds like it will do the trick!

Well.. there is the 100% lifetime guarantee no questions asked.. There are only a few parts that would get messed up so i'm guessing it's not very hard for them to identify whats going on pretty quickly.

Just be glad they stand behind their product and don't make a big deal about it when you use the warranty

i need to get on my KK soon..

Just looked at mine and it is an "L" shaped bolt that would be hard to find at a hardware store. I have never had the problem but the resistance unit is pretty heavy and cranks on that bolt pretty hard. It is probably a 5 cent part.

What exactly are the parts which fail on the Kurt's Kinetic (I'm not home right now)? I will contact KK and order them pre-emptively so I have them on hand when they fail.

The parts, an L bolt and plastic tensioner knob arrived on the 24th, I ordered them on the 22nd in the afternoon. Fast service, as should be with every warranty claim. Oh, and FWIW the L bolt looks redesigned, a bit more beefy.
