New Custom Kalavinka
Kalavinka tubes and lugs custom built by Young Cycle in South Korea.
*that's my name on the top tube and the color is inspired by ancient Korean ceramic glazes.

I can't remember right now whether or not they're NJS builders, but they make some of the most drool-worthy lugged frames around. Them, Johnny, Vanilla and Sachs are my favorite builders.

If it was built in korea then it is not a real kalavinka, even though the all the lugs are kalavinka... wonder what mr tanabe would say... where did u get the lugs? or the guys built you the bike using those lugs? I been trying to nail a set of those lugs since long time ago
Nice frame, i have to recognize that.

I guess that's one way of getting around Tanabe-San not accepting orders from new customers at the moment.

I'm trying to understand what's special about a brand new Korean bike that looks like a 25 year old Italian bike that's utterly outmoded, but it's not happening.

Kalavinka allows any frame builder that uses at least three tubes and an unmentioned number of lugs as a 'Kalavinka'. I'm sure they also expect a certain amount of craftsmanship but that's all that was explained to me. I don't know the particularlities of how their system works but it leads me to question how many Kalavinkas are actually made by Kalavinka.
The shop is known as Young Cycle but their cycle brand is called KAYAK. They build Kalavinkas to order, as well as Columbus-tubed bikes. This particular frame is Kalavinka tubes, lugs, and fork with Campagnolo and Ritchey bits.
I really wanted the bike to have a 1-1/8" headtube but apparently Kalavinka doesn't cast any of those lugs so I'm 'stuck' with 1".
Yes.
It's inspired by ancient Korean ceramic glazes.
Tubes and lugs are ordered direct from the Kalavinka shop in Japan and are delivered to the builder here in Korea. I think he prefers to make bikes out of Columbus stuff so that he can show off his workmanship, but I wanted something that they were really good at and as they've been building with Kalavinka parts for the better part of the last 25 years I went that direction.

How did you order it? I was looking on their site at mini-velos, and it didn't seem too English-friendly...
Also: that bike is beautiful. Congrats!

I like it.

Oh my, that's just purrrdy.
No . . . on 2nd thought, it's just gorgeous.
In fact . . . I think it just moved.
If I may respond . . . it's simply different strokes for different folks. Some folks love carbon frames for whatever those reason are . . . I don't get that so I can't explain it.
For me, and obviously many others, a lugged steel frame is like a timeless work of art, and the craftsmanship that goes into making such a frame adds even more to it's beauty and value.
This here is just sexy, hawt, beautifulness:
HAWT, I tell you!
Now if you'll excuse me, I have to go and change my underwear.

To those who say they don't understand why someone would ride it, I say I don't understand why you would ride a harsh alum bike or fragile carbon.
