Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

What Happened? Ultegra Is Supposed To Be Better.

I just upgraded my cassette and rear dérailleur. My LBS changed my rear cassette to a 6500 Ultegra. The shop also changed my dérailleur from a Deore to an Ultegra. I now experience slow shifting in the lower gears. There is a hesitation during the shift that wasn't there before. I have a flat bar road bike with twist shifters. With the old setup I clicked from one gear to the other with any lag between shifts. The dérailleur is a long cage dérailleur and so was the old one. The old cassette had a 34T large cog while the new one has a 27T large cog. Everything else remains the same.

What went wrong? I had the shop were I bought the components do the installation and set up.

Probably just needs to be fine tuned.

Isn't Deore their Mountain Bike line?
Tell the mechanic the problem you are having. You probably just need to adjust the cables. Ride a few hundred miles and go back and have them fine tune it (cable stretch).

take a link out of your chain?
(kim - while off the bike, just shift the derailler up a half dozen times without pedaling, that'll seat the cables well.
otherwise, yes, it's just a cable tension or high/low limit issue)

Good advices so far, also check if something is disrupting the cable movement.

I just did almost the same change about two weeks ago. Difference is I'm using a Deore thumb shifter. When I put the new cable on, I stretched the cable with my hands under the down tube, undid the cable bolt on the rear deraileur, pulled through the slack and tightened it back up. It's running like a dream.

Try new cables too. And then some fine tuning.

All of this is good news. My next step is to purchase an Ultegra compact crank set. The final step is to upgrade my frame to an all carbon frame. This should all take place within the next month or so. The frame set will not be available until sometime in January so that gives me time to check out the crank sets.

Did they replace the chain too? If not it could be the chain is a little too stretched and not meshing well with the new cassette.

Otherwise I would check derailer hanger alignment and chain length to make sure those are ok.

Nothing was done with the old chain. I will probably replace the chain after I get my new frame. The cables will be replaced during the change over from the old to the new.

That was my first thought. I would suspect that the grip shifters have a different ratio than road shifters do.

The mechanic (owner) of the shop told me that the grip shifters are compatible with the new components.

I'm guessing they are "compatible" but not ideal. Maybe you have to squeeze past the click to get them to upshift cleanly.

Two things - 1) replace your chain with the new cassette.

2) Fine tune your rear derailleur - it's not difficult. Follow the link on the park tool website, it sounds like you probably just need to fine tune the tension. Your limit screws are probably fine if a shop did the instal. Just read this part under "checking the rear indexing adjustment"

https://www.parktool.com/repair/readhowto.asp?id=64

Shimano mtn and road RD's use exactly the same cable travel.
I'm running a 9s XT RD & cassette with Ultegra 9s STI's and the shifting is absolutely perfect.

Grip shifters are compatible with shimano cassettes. The spacing is not different. I swapped a new 7 speed cassette on and the SRAM Grip Shifters worked fine.

Deore is just as good as Ultegra. The only difference is a few grams. Did the shop put a new chain on? If you are using an old chain that is likely the problem.

I have never wasted a lot of money on a chain. I think the standard KMC chains work great if you do a lot of variable weather riding. You'll extend the life of your cassette if you change your chain once in awhile.

Always replace the chain when you replace the cassette.

I appreciate all of the input. It looks like I will invest in a new chain as well.

unless you're going to do your own work,

just - buy - a - new - bike.

you'll spend less money/get more value.
