Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Newbie schwag suggestions please

Yesterday someone handed me a totally unexpected check for $2k and said "Merry Xmas - buy something to help your riding".

I already have 3 good road bikes, so I'm thinking Powertap SL. Or maybe I should just buy into a mutual fund for future schwag....

Thoughts?

Quark plus Garmin 705. Power, with GPS, and the ability to use whatever wheels you want.

The Quarq technology looks pretty good. Not so sure about needing a Getting Pretty Stupid unit on a bike, though...

Have you checked the market recently. If you put the money into a mutual fund next year you'll have $1,000 to spend on whatever schwag that you want.

You have to have a head unit to run the Quarq. The ANT+ 705 does that job, tracks a ton of data, has a customizable display, tells you interesting stuff a power tap won't, gives you better graphs, and gives you the ability to map out routes in new areas and navigate with GPS if you're in unfamiliar territory.

At about the same price as a Powertap, and less weight. So even if you don't put a lot of value on the navigation features, the combination of a Quarq and a 705 is still a pretty good answer to the which power meter question.

Au contrair, now is the best time to invest in a solid index fund, which will still be around next year and has nowhere to go but up.

EPO will really help your riding

Since you seem a little ambivalent about what to do with the money I would suggest giving it to me until you have a clear picture of what to do with it.

A good powermeter and the will to use it seems like money well spent.

Just because the market is down doesn't mean it has nowhere to go but up... it can of course go more down.
