Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Shopping for new Brifters

In the market for new brifters. Looking at ultegra, and found that the 6510 is more expensive than the 6600. Why is that? Any way, someone know of a good ~250$ pair?

You just got a bike and you're already looking for new brifters?

Do the ones on your used bike not work or what?

Yeah, picked up a used 2006 Motobecane Le Champ for 200, with now seat post, and no left shifter... But still a great deal!

This bike is a 9spd bike?

If you want to take advantage of the cheap shifters, nashbar, then you can use alternate cable routing

https://www.sheldonbrown.com/gloss_aa-l.html#alternate

to get it to work with 9speed if that is what you have.

If you just want to know why NOS is more expensive it may be due to the popularity of cyclocross and its love of 9speed.

Yeah, how many gears does the rear wheel have?

Lets take it from there.

Good deal, but I hope you went over the frame well. No left shifter to me indicates a crashed bike or something of the sort.

if your bike is 9sp, you can B-route the rear shifter cable from a campy 10sp lever to run a 9sp shimagnolo setup. try some 2009 centaur or veloce levers.

cable routing for 10sp campy levers to shimano RD and 9sp cassette.

no LEFT shifter? as in front? so it has a right/rear shifter? if all your missing is the left you can probably find just a left shifter on ebay. or you could go all lance style and run a downtube shifter for the left/front.

Which is why that description is insufficient.

I'm not sure SRAM would be too happy with that statement. Same with Microshift and FSA (should that ever come to pass).

What's necessary is an accurate, generic descriptive term. Brifter works. If you don't like that, then perhaps Campy's "control levers" description will make you feel better. In any case, "brifter" fills the bill so it isn't going away. Get used to it.

Walk into a LBS tomorrow, ask them for some Road shifters. If they say that they're all out of down tube shifters then you can go back to calling them brifters. That word aggravates me too.

Edit: I call 'em STI shifters.

if you search ebay for shimano shifter left, you get a bunch of results. you don't need an ultregra shifter just something that matches pretty well. even a triple would be fine, but i guess a double would probably be pr effered. i'd try to win one of the 105 shifters.

https://cgi.ebay.com/Shimano-105-Shif...3%3A1|294%3A50
https://cgi.ebay.com/Shimano-105-Left...3%3A1|294%3A50

if you use the keyword 'brifter' instead of 'shifter' it messes the search up and you get shimano fishing equipment and a bunch of mountain bike shifters ... so i guess they are shifters, not brifters.
