First century ride! solo!
Oh man am I stoked!
First a little background:
Been road riding for a little over a year now. I came from a running background and I have a fixed gear that I tooled around on a little bit before that. Currently training for intercollegiate racing with a HRM. Lots of 2x20s, fast ground rides and speed skills drills atm. I usually rake in 60-80 solo or with a fast group pretty regularly. I figured that I would skip the usual wed. hammerfest (Swami's wednesday Pendleton ride for those Socal riders) and accomplish my first triple-digit mile ride.
Data:
17.9 mph avg speed
5:45 min time
160 bpm avg HR
186 max HR <-- (1 bpm below my LTHR)
Felt really, really good. I feel alot less tired then I usually do after riding to/from the Swami's ride and I spent a pretty good amount of time in my tempo zone out on the coast, making sure other fast looking riders I encountered on the coast didn't pass me and leave me behind . I feel really accomplished and I expected this ride to take alot lot longer.
The amount of climbing was very small (I'd guestimate that it was ~2000 feet) but I feel good about myself nonetheless.
Looking forward to completing more centuries in the future including the infamous Tour of the Unknown Coast in Nor Cal when I go back to school (~11,000 feet climbing!).
Happy New Years to all I hope you all enjoy your New Years rides!!! Gonna be 2x20's or speed skills drills for me on the trainer depending on amount of sleep tonite/ energy levels in the morning.

Hey Sojourn!
You were the one who posted those pics from San Marcos State U. right? Great pics by the way I'm here in Vista and since you posted those pics the desktop background on my parents' PC has been the one you posted facing Double-Peak with the red flowers/bush in the foreground.
I headed east to Escondido -> Harmony Grove/Elfin Forest -> La Costa Ave to the coast -> Up and down torrey pines into La Jolla -> back to Oceanside -> East on the San Luis Rey River Path -> N. Sante Fe back into vista and at that point I had 15 miles left to cover so I just putted around vista for a bit.
Oh BTW,
Happy New Year everyone!
Now I have to go put in a 10-6:30 shift.... yay winter break!

Congratulations!
As you probably noticed, if you're doing 60-80 regularly then the only real difference with a century is the mental aspect of seeing triple digits on the computer.
Also, I've found that my climbing total is probably more than I thought at the end of a century. What may feel like 2,000' could well be 3,000' or more. I did a "mostly flat" century last summer that clocked 2,000' on my friend's GPS. My legs certainly didn't seem to care.

Congratulations!
Though as 'palookabutt' correctly points out, if you're already doing 80mile rides, then no reason why a couple of extra burritos later you can't complete a 100mile.

Congrats. Curious about what you rode to get triple digits. Heck, I'm curious about how you get 60-80 rides. I'm trying to up my mileage and would like to get some of those distances. Especially without the crazy traffic screwing it all up.

Congratulations on your ride. Us Midwesterners huddled by the fireplace need stories like these to help us get through the winter months.

There are a lot of threads about training for centuries. Conventional wisdom is increase your miles by 10% a week to work up to it. A lot of people hit a wall around 60-80 miles, so once you get past that it's not too bad but it's learning about your body on the way there that is the important part. That said, I think most people could go out and ride 100 miles if they really wanted to, but they might be sore the next day, especially if there is even the slightest bit wrong with the fit, etc.

umd -- I understand how to increase my mileage. The part here in SoCal that I find difficult is dealing with the traffic. I sure get tired of heavy traffic. I'm looking at ride threads, etc for routes to use.

I am in Alhambra. I frequently ride over to the Santa Fe Dam and ride the bike path.
I'll start a thread about looking for a club for weekend rides.
