Derailleur cages are only warrantied to 1,000,000 feet of vertical. After that even the alloy ones explode!

What do you mean by "detonation"?
(And please folks -- spare me the atomic bom pics.)

Serves you right for riding Campy. Wait, doesn't that new DA 7900 have a CF rear derailleur cage too?

Wait a second- your cage exploded, you're on the phone getting a ride home, and you thought you'd log onto BF to chat about it? Did you pick up some Juju Fruit first?

Is your chain alright? It seems th few times I've left home without a chaintool are the only times I've ever needed one on the road.

Sweet mother of God is that a dirty chain.
Even my MTB chain isn't that dirty, and I ride it on pea gravel rails-to-trails paths, and cinder covered roads.
Not saying this would have prevented it, but take your bike to the local Do It Yourself car wash, stand above and behind your bike, and powerwash (with hot water) your cassette and chain.

I don't know the order of events and what caused this yet, but these are the facts as I know them:
1) The cage is broken in half
2) The rod that holds the cage onto the parallelogram is broken
3) The spring in the parallelogram is broken
4) The hanger is bent
5) Some spokes are bent
6) the chain has no kinks and all links rotate freely

You know, you may be one of the only riders outside of the pro peloton that has put that many miles on a sram RD. Your RD may have seen more miles than the vast majority of those ever made.

Sounds like something got caught up in it. Especially if you weren't shifting at the time. If not then something on the derail broke/let go causing the cage to move into the wheel causing the broken cage, bent spokes, bent hanger, etc.
