Keeping water bottle cool on long rides
 

Just a quick question, i seem to find that my drink bottle is getting warm during long rides, how to keep it cool is the question?

Polar Bottles.

They rock.

Freeze one,
Or if it's not that hot out 1/2 fill it and freeze that.

I live in Houston, where it's HOT. In the heat of summer, I 3/4 freeze one large Polar bottle and 1/4 freeze another. This usually works.

A tip for freezing less than a full bottle... freeze things at a 45 degree angle, rather than standing straight up. That way you have ice near the top of the bottle and water nearly all the way to the bottom. This seems to help the defrosting process so you don't end up with a big chunk of ice and no water.

Hmm that's got me thinking, if i freeze the bottle laying on it's side and only put 3/4 or 1/2 of water it will mean that it will act like a big ice box. I will look into the other bottles that others have mentioned. Thanks for the tips guys. Im sick of drinking bath water on a long ride :thumb:

If you don't mind the fred look, Camelbaks work great in the heat. Keep water cool for a long time.

I like the look of the Polar bottles, but because i am a tight ass i will just try and semi-freeze my bottle next training ride. The only bummer is that i need somewhere to put my mobile phone i currently have it in a cannister which takes up the spot for my other bottle :(

How long are your rides? I usually fill my bottles all the way to the top with ice and then top it off with water and i still have ice in the bottles by the end of a 2.5 hour ride.

So you ride with one sock, the other cools your bottle? :lol:

Get another bottle and put the cell on the back pocket of your shirt.

The insulated Polar bottle work well or you could use a PolarPak which will stay cold for 12 hours.

My $.02 = Polar bottles are ok, but really only keep the water cool at best for 1hr.

Not if you start out w/ them frozen.

What's worse than running your water bottle(s) dry on a long ride? Needing fluid and finding that it's still frozen and having to hold the bottle under your arm pits to thaw it out.

Fixed that for ya. I killed two mobile phones from them getting wet from sweat.

Ahh good thinking, my cell is a brick haha E71. But i will give it a go. I might get a spare sim card and put it in my RAZR and just use that as a Bike Phone. It's a pretty tough phone, when i was drunk one night i left it in the freezer and it still works :crash: The thing is unbreakable

I will try out the ice in the bottle if not i will just get a polar bottle, but about 1 hr is about as long as i need the bottle cold for :)

Come to my part of the world ... it's about -30C here now. If you were here, you'd be asking how to keep the water from freezing solid within minutes.


But if it were a bit warmer than that, what helps is this ...

1) Freeze the bottle of water, make sure the bottle is only 3/4 full when you do that.

2) Put the bottle in a sock ... yes, like a cotton sport sock. Ladies socks work best because they are smaller.

3) Run the sock (and bottle) under cold water until it is soaking wet.

4) Put the bottle in your holder and ride. Resoak the sock periodically if possible.

The air across the wet sock creates an air conditioning effect. And, believe it or not, I have ridden in some very hot temps, and have used this method.

I do this as well.

Put a wet sock around the bottle, and stick it back in the cage. The water evaporates as you ride, and the evaporation cools the bottle a bit.

It's been cold enough here that I end up with icy slush in my bottles toward the end. How do you keep water from freezing on longer rides? lol! That's what I want to know.
