Family cycling/Race history?

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Family cycling/Race history?

I have always heard stories of one of my Great Uncles that raced in Ireland in the 40's-50's I believe. My grandmother tells a story that my uncle would be in a race, and go out in a solo break, than stop at a shop for a snack, than when the group would be catching up he would jump on his bike and take off again.
Suposidly the Attic of my Grandmothers home used to be full of cycling trophies that my uncle had won.
I wish I had more info, but unfortunately that's about all she can remember. Maybe I will have to start researching to see if I can find any Newspaper archives with any info of his race history, or the the racing culture in Ireland at the time.

She also tells about my uncle working in a Bike shop in Galway, and having a very nice bike, though she does not know what kind it was.

Anyone else have any stories of family racers?

Not cycling, but there used to be a boxer in my family who was so fast he could turn out the light and get into bed before it was dark.

None YET... my grandchildren will tell stories about my glorious amateur racing career, and how wicked fast their grandpa was on two wheels.

Sounds like a plan... I am hoping to carry on this new family tradition...

Actually I am going to try to dig up some info on My uncles racing career and add it to the family genealogy... got to put my history degree to work at some point.
