Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

pedal tightness question

Quick question about pedals -- I've been using a different set of pedals from my usual pair for the last few weeks, and they've been particularly difficult to clip out of. I went back to my usual pair of pedals (Look Keos), and they feel awfully easy to clip out of. I'm sure it's just in my head, but it made me wonder -- do the springs in the pedals get weaker over time? Is it standard practice to have to tighten them as they get older? My pedals are 6 months old, I've probably ridden ~5000 miles with them (I started riding 6 months ago).

Thanks!

Springs don't go soft over time, unless they're really cheap.

It's more likely that the bearing surface of the cleat/pedal interface has worn down, making it easier to clip out.

I bought Keo Classics in the fall. Right out of the box they seemed to be sprung very soft. I had to wind them all the way up to prevent the cleat from partially pulling out on the upstroke when climbing. The other Keos have stiffer springs.

if it gets particularly easy or particularly hard to clip in/out of your pedals, they are probably worn out. i replace mine around every 6 months or so. though one time i had to replace new ones because i put my foot down when my rear derailleur jammed...

You mean replace the cleats, right? I've never replaced a set of pedals (I still ride my first race pedals from 1991 on one bike).
