Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

New First Road Bike

I'm looking for a new ride. I have a 2 yr old KHS that I've pretty much set up for touring (Panniers - Bob Trailer - Fenders - etc). I'm 63 yrs./ 6 ft./ 220 lb. I do 125 to 150 miles a week on county roads. Not a lot of hills. I have a more upright riding style. I'd like to get a lighter bike w/ better comp.'s for my weekly riding. After much searching I've settled on two that I like. Each seems well worth the cost. The Specialized has some features that accounts for the price diff, like carbon seat post, brake ext levers & pedals. I'd like some opinion's pro & con. Thanks.

Take a look at the Trek 5.0 Pilot. Carbon so very light and very similar geometry to Sequoia (ultegra components). Not cheap but a beautiful bike. Or 2.1 is aluminum with carbon stays (105).

The Fuji @ $849 was at my local Performance Bike Store. Haven't been able to find it for less anywhere locally.

main difference between those two bikes is compact over triple. if you have really weak legs and plan on climbing 5k feet then go with the specialized. otherwise get the fuji, even if you plan to climb. also the fuji has better wheels.

in anycase i wouldn't buy either, try to find something with 105 components all around for one grand. spending an extra hunderad on compoents is worth it! make sure you have money to spare on gear, helmet, and furture upgrades like stem, saddle, brake pads, clipless or wheels.

I purchased the Fuji at my local Performance Bike Store. The gave me an extra 15% off so the cost was $722.00. I also joined their club and get 10% back to use on my next purchase. I think I'll be happy with the Fuji. Now we just have to get rid of this 'damn' snow.

At 220 lb you should go with the 32 spokes in the rear wheel on the Sequoia. Get the 11-28 cassette changed to 11-21 or 23 then you will have all the low gears you need plus close ratios in the middle of the sprocket.
