Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Compact crankset advice?

I'm thinking of swapping out my 53/39 Dura Ace crankset for a compact to ride an event with some nasty climbs this spring. SRAM Rival looks reasonable along with Ultegra SL. Are there any issues with either of these? How about compatibility with other Dura Ace 7800 components?

I just ordered a Shimano FC-R700 Compact Crankset on sale minus an additional 15% if you use the coupon code. Toyota United used them on their bikes as needed.

ultegra SL is 100% compatible with DA7800, just lower your FD slightly after installation.

SRAM Rival works well with SRAM Rival. I would go Shimano FC-R700 and/or Ultegra with Dura Ace 7800.

Pretty much any compact crank will work after you lower the FD

Another vote for the FC-R700 here. I've been using one for over a year after I decided my truvativ crank was a piece of junk. Shifting is great.

For what it's worth, my DA 7800 crank and front der. work better with my SRAM Red group than my SRAM Red crank and front der.

If it's just for a single event then consider the SL-K. I got one NIB on eBay for $100.

I put a Ultegra SL 6650 compact on my otherwise DA setup. Works great. Looks hot.

btw, R600 and R700 are discontinued. You might as well get an ultegra or ultegra SL compact which are lighter than R700. heck, even 105 and tiagra are quite good.

I have the R700 compact crank also. To simplify matters I just say I have full dura ace.

Like others said. If it's one event you can pick up a R700 for a little over a hundred.
If you plan to use it more I'd go with the Ultegra 6650 compact.

Actually a SRAM Rival crankset will work just fine with any Shimano groupset. I have used one with both 105 and Dura Ace front derailleurs.

Shimano FD/Cranks seems super refined compared to SRAM. Hence my current setup:
