Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I'm starting to gather up parts for a new build. I'm wondering what you wouldn't buy used (other then a seat). My first thoughts were a BB, Headset, and chain.... I'd fork over cash for new on those.

differing opinions?

So many things come to mind. Is this just bike related?
For instance: vegetables.

I've bought a used saddle before on Ebay.. nothing wrong with that.. not like your going to lick it or anything. It was a old san marco not made any longer.

I agree on the others..

What's wrong with buying a used saddle? I've sold and given away a few saddles after trying them out for less than a month.

Also, some of the stuff you guys mention I have given a few bucks to my friends for. Used does not mean completely s***. Look it over. Give it a try.

Cables and housing!

A chain is the next on the list, as it is nearly impossible to evaluate wear, and they dont last that long anyways. A cassette is fine, as long as they have a really good pic of the wear on the rings. The same goes for chainrings.

Bibs are about the only thing I would absolutely not buy used. Everything else depends on inspection, but in general I would prefer consumable items (bar tape, chains, cables, etc.) to be new.

On the team I was on last year there is this hot girl cat3. She really is pretty darn good. When I was looking for a skin suite the team manager mentioned something about giving me her 2007 skin suite. At first I was thinking ah man, but then I got to thinking But I didn't end up getting it.

Anyway I thought that would be a good story.

Most of the guys here would buy it. In fact, there would probably be a bidding war over it...

Bibs/shorts.

Component wise....cassette - unless you can inspect, chain, cables, bar tape, tires.

Stuff that is great to buy used:
Pedals - especially if it's just an additional pair for another one of your bikes.
Wheels
Handlebars
Stems
Seatposts

Yep, something like that would sell for more than new.

This guy that mentioned it didn't seem to think a thing about it. He is an older dude and was just like " well maybe I could get you one of ___ ___'s old skin suites. My head filled full of the endless possibilities of fun. He ended up giving me a new one though.

I have to buy my saddles used, because they don't make them anymore.
