Asian pr0n -- new Powertap wheel is done

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Asian pr0n -- new Powertap wheel is done

I just finished my new Powertap wheel and put it on the race rig, and I'm stoked! PT SL wired hub, Planet X 101 32 spoke tubular rim. 14 gauge stainless black spokes from Mike Garcia at Odds and Endos, Sapim inverted brass nipples.

This rim is from Gigantex, the same as the Vuelta rim that's on the front (part of the Bikesdirect group buy from last year). They are a total pain in the ass to build, in case anybody's wondering. I had to make a special spoke nipple tool just to reach the nipples through the 101mm rim, and you're basically feeling around blind to thread and tighten them.

It's not especially light, but it's not a tank, either. The bike weighs in at 17.5 lbs; with the 50mm rear it was just under 17. I'll be racing this bike like this, and putting a disk cover on it for time trials on the P3. With the spoke count and rim depth, I think it'll be sturdy enough to train and race on, so that's what I'm planning. I have about $700 in the wheel/PT system.

Now the all important question: should I spring for some custom stickers so the stupid wheels match?

No stickers would look best imo. Or wait and get the matching front. It would look a bit out of place on a road bike, though.

I wish I could; they're under the clear coat for both wheels. That must be one of the "special services" Gigantex offers to resellers.

You can remove the decals even if they're under a clear coat, you just need to be delicate with your sanding & recoating of proper-grade laquer, then buff out to smooth. Go slow, go delicate, take your time.

I saw basically the same rim - Blackwell Research branded - at the Chicago swap meet this weekend and went back 3 times to look at it. Would have bought it if it was the correct drilling.

I may do that at some point when I feel like taking the time. Right now I just want to put some miles on it.

LOL..I think it's a love it or hate it thing. Opinions in the shop when I was finishing trueing it were mixed..mostly variations on "WTF is that and what is it for?". I do wonder what disco ball Planet X was remembering when they specified that faux-marble finish.
