Bibs and overheating

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Bibs and overheating

A question for those that wear bibs. Don't you get a lot hotter riding with bibs?

Ok, that came out wrong. Do you overheat more (compared to wearing shorts) when you wear bibs? Or do you not notice any difference?

Curious.

No. Bibs are superior in every possible manner... assuming no bad peaches, of course.

nope! not at all. before the bibs i wore cotton tops and that was much less efficient at wicking away sweat than anything i wear now. so cooling improved.

I have been wearing bibs so long that I don't remember what shorts are like.

If you offered Assos shorts for free and Assos bibs for 220 bucks I would buy the bibs. I have no intrest in cycling shorts EVER....

You should really try some...

No, I thought I would but I don't, and I live in Arizona.

Only drawback to bibs is taking a piss.

Not so much hotter, but on a really hot day I have some issues with sweat running down into my nether regions wearing bibs. I have one pair of shorts for days where I expect to be riding in fairly extreme temps. I wear them once or twice a year.

As tariq08 said, only downfall is bathroom stops. I'll never buy shorts again. If overheating is a big concern, use a full zip jersey with bibs.

OP, asking if "you overheat more (compared to wearing shorts) when you wear bibs?" is not the correct way to put your question. The question is what, if anything, makes cyclists warmer - nobody overheats from wearing either bibs or shorts.

I'll take a contrarian position to what others have said. Bibs, for me, are a fashion statement. I'm definitely hotter in my bibs. Er, I mean, my bibs make me warmer than my shorts do. I think it's because of the extra material. So I usually wear shorts.

Plus, on a long ride, shorts are easier to drop if I need to use the euphemism. And I don't have a gut, so the elastic band on shorts doesn't cut into me, as it apparently does to some riders.

i have had a zipper, local seamstress, sewn into my bibs for that reason. the twig and berries do get hot when riding and they need to cool down once in a while. just gotta be careful when zipping up...the scream heard 'round the world.

lol never even thought of such an issue...bibs are the bomb.

No, bibs wick away moisture too. How are they a fashion statement? The straps on mine are under my jersey.

I don't have a gut, but I still find the waistband of my one pair of shorts to be pretty uncomfortable. If bibs are hotter, I haven't noticed, but bibs are so much more comfortable that I wouldn't care if they were.

I ride in all weather here in TX, at lunch, and bibs are not any warmer than shorts.

You can look at it in the other direction too, and see that on cold days, bibs do nothing to add warmth.

"How are they a fashion statement? The straps on mine are under my jersey."

Fashion statements aren't always visible to everyone or even anyone, except perhaps in ads. These straps are usually worn under something, too.

you are crazy, women wear fancy bras because they make them feel sexy, my bibs make me feel like the dorkiest n00b on earth until i put the jersey over them and forget they're there, bibs are the biggest fashion compromise i have ever made in my life, nothing other than efficiency could make me put these things on every day

Bibs=fasion statement?

They are by far more comfortable to ride in period. Warmth? Both are the same.
