First time on deep dish wheels + 20mph wind?
I finally got to ride on my new Reynolds deep dish wheels this weekend. It wasn't quite what I expected (I actually didn't know what to expect). I felt like I was about to be blown off the road. I certainly felt faster, but I just never quite felt stable. When I finished my ride, my whole upper body was tired.
Is there a wind speed where you no longer use your deep dish wheel set?
Is this common or am I a wuss?

I've been in 30+mph gusts that were a little "iffy", but then I just drop down the to 60mm wheels.
It's common. Ride on them more, you'll get used to it.

You'll get used to it. Best thing is to go out and ride them in really windy conditions as often as you can, in the beginning. That forces you to adapt. I remember the first time I rode my Zip 404s in really bad weather.... ie 45mph gusts. I was so worked over by the end of the ride.... just trying to hang onto the bike. But, you lean quick that way.

Thank you.
Can we stop calling them "deep dish?" Dish has to do with the the position of the hub perpendicular to the plane of the rim. Wheels with massively varying rim depths can have identical dish.
These are deep section rims. Not deep dish.
Not picking on the OP, as I'm sure you're just picking up on a common, but incorrect term.

Fun isn't it? Now you know why there aren't front disc wheels.
Rode a century in a sustained 20-30mph cross to headwind. Roughly 50% of the ride was cross wind. I was only riding rims that were about 30mm deep, but it was enough that my arms and shoulders were the only thing sore the next few days.

I tried to use my Reynolds DV46Ts at the Sea Otter circuit race in 2008 and decided it was way too windy. Ended up getting blown over the road pretty good even with my shallow rims. According to MotionBased the winds were about 25mph.

I ride a bike because I enjoy it.
I enjoy the pain. The work. The joy. All of it.
I hated every second of owning deep section rims.
They took the pleasure out of riding for me.
It was like riding with a sail out.
I sold them, happily, and went back to box section and low section rims.
I am much happier now and am back to enjoying being on the bike.
