Why don't you guys wave?

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

On a recent group climb up a mountain, as riders were descending past me I gave them the "turn around" hand signal. Got more than a few laughs.

Maybe those who don't acknowledge you are practicing flying along in a pro peloton during the TdF. You can't wave to everyone.

umd had an effing good point. No way in hell do you even ride a bike Unsafealpine. Who in their right mind would ride a road bike and post more in Foo than in the Road Cycling section; when there are such great ideas thrown around like those from umd?

Well, we wave to everyone else, when you're not around.

Sorry.

I wave or nod.

Many roadies are indeed snobs who think along the lines of, "I'm training, not just riding a bike. therefore I'm too busy to acknowledge that you exist."

Then again, I've found that most groups of people (democrat, Republican, black, white, asian, jewish, christian, old, young, roadie, MTBer, cyclist, cager, etc...) has a certain percentage of the group that are *****holes. So you can't really hold it against all roadies. Some roadies are indeed considerate enough to recognize that other people do indeed exist in the world.

Why the f does anyone care whether someone waves to them or not? And just because I'm on a bike, that doesn't make me your comrade or whatever.

One day I'm going to wear a polo shirt and walk around waving to everyone else who wears a polo shirt.

Simple. Just because someone rides a bike doesn't make them my friend. If someone waves at me I'll give a nod, or a little wave. I just don't feel the need to buddy up with everyone I see on a bike. I also commute by bike in SF, so I would get a repetitive stress injury if I waved at everyone I see daily.

I only wave to people that don't wear helmets. And are wearing a '70s vintage Moltini cap the way it's supposed to be worn. Screw the rest of you people.

All titles about roadies not waving should be automatically moved to foo. Of course, road cycling is mostly redundant to foo.

When I rode a Yamaha R1 I'd say about 90% of other sportbike motorcyclist would wave. I guess bicyclist don't share the same comradery as motorcycle enthusiasts. IMO, not acknowledging a wave while on a bicycle or anywhere else in society says something about your character. Not whining, just sayin'

When you're walking in the mall or grocery, do you wave to all the other walking people? Do they wave back?

When I ride my XR650R supermotard I flip off guys on sportbikes... usually when I'm passing them on the inside of a tight corner.

No, but I might to people that share a common interest. I don't always wave to other cyclists, but I'll definitely wave or nod back if waved at.

I nod or give the two finger salute off the shifters. Waving is a bit much.

A guy came from the opposite direction wearing pink tights. Yes, I said pink tights. I shot a courtesy wave and stifled a laugh, but he went by with the "I'm too intense to wave" vibe lol. In pink tights. That's when my own concern for wave etiquette evaporated.
I also fart in pace lines.

i think it depends on where you are. in my county (pretty big geographically), there are hardly any riders. when you pass one, which is very seldom, you wave, or even stop to talk. but in areas that i see a lot of riders. i don't see them wave to each other as much. i always wave. but i'm still a noob to it so we'll see if i keep it up after i get used to it.

It makes me a little disheartened.
I'm not your comrade, Ivan. Please take your commie propaganda to P&R, or Boulder.

I wouldn't say I don't know anything about them. I know they don't wave back at people who wave at them. It's not their life history, but it's something. It's hard to not judge people by their actions or lack there of. But in all seriousness, I just assume the other person didn't see my wave. I'd like to think that most people arn't that self absorbed.

These threads are the ultimate in stupidity. The OP is just trolling trying to get a reaction out of the "roadies".

I generally nod, wave to people I know, and return waves, but if I am training, i.e. concentrating on holding a particular effort or especially a high effort, I may not always be able to, or notice you.

If that hurts your feelings than boo-fricken-hoo.
