It really depends on body fat percentage. There are two types of fat, essential fat and storage fat. In Men, essential fat is 3% of body weight (12% in women) and anything more than that is just stored energy. The nature of our sport makes it beneficial to have some stored energy (long weekend of riding, etc.) and people with some storage fat are more apt to survive serious illnesses, so it would not be wise to get down to 3%. That said, there is no reason to be over 10% body fat for a man. At that point you have more than you can use in any endurance event and you are just carrying around the weight, quite literally.

Please don't get me wrong, I do understand that. Now please explain the storage fat vs. essential fat? Are you saying of the healthy 12-15% body fat you should be have only 3-5% body fat?(adding 9-12% as storage) Your body doesn't distinguish between the two. So what is healthy by your definition? I was once at 7% body fat in my early 20's when I played tennis. But 8-19% body fat for men is healthy while 21-33% body fat for women. Below 8% is unhealthy. I still want to get down below 10% but I will do that with some muscle building so I don't look like Karen Carpenter.
I am not sure what you are asking, but I will take a shot at answering. Keep in mind that I am not a helth professional, just someone who reads a lot and practices what I read.
If you are a man and you are 12% body fat, you are very much in the health range by most standards. Out of that 12% though, only 3% of your body weight is essential fat (stored in your organs, bone marrow, and nervous system). So, 9% of your body weight is storage fat and can be safely lost.
As I noted above, many health professionals don't recommend going below 5% because the lack of reserves can make you susceptible to illness and less likely to survive serious illness.
Wikipedia seems to have a good article on it: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Body_fat_percentage

First, I agree with the building muscle part and that is why I focus on body mass instead of weight.
I am not sure what you are asking, but I will take a shot at answering. Keep in mind that I am not a helth professional, just someone who reads a lot and practices what I read.
