Wheelset on a $500 budget

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Wheelset on a $500 budget

Pcad is right...yet again. Neuvations are piles of Turd and i'm sick of mine.

I was thinking of the Soul 4.0's but i really just want a rim that isn't going to give me a headache and i'm not convinced the souls will do that.

I want something stiff i want it to stay true but no overly heavy. I intend on racing this summer...but i'm a cat 5 wana be hackathon.

Go.

after buying a pair of pre-owned Bontrager Race X Lite Aero's for half of what your budget is, i'm convinced.

I actually looked at a set of those in a sporting goods store and i was impressed. Light, high tension, and i thought they were kind of sexy...actually.

I don't own these, but they fit your criteria perfectly and are generally lauded:

I've been using these for crits. Fairly light (1635g, per Easton), reasonably inexpensive and they've stayed very true for me. I think they're $500 msrp now, but cheaper than that most places.

They have a higher spoke count (24/28) which is nice for us bulky boys.

I've used their CF tubulars for two seasons of cross, road, and countless training miles with absolutely no issue. For every bad experience, there is also a good.

However, for the money the Soul 4.0's are nice.

Second that.

Didn't expect much from a reasonably lightweight 16 spoked wheelset but after year of urban abusing I'm also convinced.

They aren't balanced. The weld where the rim is joined is both visible and heavy causing the wheels to wobble up and down when you spin them in your hand. I can also hear it in the rear hub on the road. They stayed true for a while, but this last year was a constant battle.

I've been happy with Fulcrum Race 3's and Ksyrium Elites. Open Pros have been ok, also. I have nothing bad to say about the other wheels mentioned.

Really? What you've described doesn't sound anything like the M28 Aero2 wheels I received... For the $200 I paid, they're a pretty damn good value in my book! Maybe you should give Neuvation a call and see what they say...
